Welcome to Day 5 of
The 12 Days of Holiday Treats!
Once again, this year, from December 1st-12th I’ll post a new holiday treat recipe every day – inspiration for your holiday entertaining!
The recipes I’m sharing are small-er batch – each recipe makes 1-dozen or a few more smaller-sized treats that are simple to prepare and that use everyday ingredients and equipment so hopefully you’ll be able to whip up any of these on a whim. Check out the treats from 2019 – 2024 at the bottom of this post too for more inspiration!
Today’s treat is inspired by a childhood favourite – Chocolate Crackles. A staple at every kid’s birthday party, these are the simplest treats to make and a taste of nostalgia for any Australian!
What are Chocolate Crackles?
To make Chocolate Crackles you need: Rice Bubbles (what we call Rice Krispoes), icing sugar, desiccated coconut, copha (vegetable shortening or coconut oil) and cocoa powder. Typically these are made in patty pans (cupcake liners) but today, I’m sharing a version made in a slice (similar to how I transformed my ANZAC biscuits into slices last year).

I’ve added some fun small candy coated chocolates (you can totally use mini M&Ms here but I had these pretty candies on hand and they worked beautifully!) to make it festive but you don’t have to. Making this into a slice makes this even easier to pull together and easier to store, too!
Chocolate Crackle Slice
Chocolate Crackles in slice form!
Ingredients
- 60g (2 cup) Rice Krispies (rice bubbles)
- 80g (1/2 cup) sifted icing sugar
- 40g (1/2 cup) unsweetened shredded coconut
- 20g (1/4 cup) cocoa powder
- 120g (1/2 cup) coconut oil, melted and cooled
- 1/4 Mini M&Ms or small candy coated chocolates
Instructions
- Grease an 8 x 8-inch square pan and line it with parchment paper.
- Mix the Rice Krispies, icing sugar, coconut and cocoa in a large bowl.
- Pour in the melted coconut oil and use a rubber spatula to stir through the dry ingredients.
- Mix through all but 1 tablespoon of the chocolate candies, making sure they are evenly distributed.
- Press the mixture into the lined loaf tin, sprinkle the rest of the chocolate candies on top, using parchment paper to press them into the top of the slice slightly.
- Refrigerate for approximately an hour.
- Remove from the pan and cut into 16 pieces.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
