Tuesdays with Dorie: Swedish Dream Cookies from Dorie’s Cookies

Swedish Dream Cookies from Dorie's Cookies on a sheet of parchmetn paper on a baking sheet.

This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe from Dorie’s Cookies is a lovely, simply and tasty treat but, despite its name, it’s not from Sweden! Dorie says:

This recipe came to me from my assistant, Mary Dodd, who got it from her cousin Marie Malchodi, who has been making these cookies for Christmas for more than twenty years. Neither Mary nor Marie is Swedish, but the first time I baked these, one of my son’s friends, Bella, was visiting from Sweden. I told her nothing about the cookies but just served them at brunch, and her first words after her first cookie were, “This tastes like home!”

Perhaps it’s the addition of cardamom that makes these taste like home for Bella – because, indeed there is Swedish version of these cookies very much like our thumbprint cookies which are filled with jam instead of a whole almond. Dorie’s version not only has cardamom and the whole almond pressed into the top of the cookie but also she used browned butter in these for even more flavour (and lovely dark specks for some visual interest!). The butter is browned, then cooled and allowed to harden again in the fridge before you use it in the cookies, which are made in a food processor (so it’s a cinch!).

I enjoyed these co0kies though I am not much of a cardamom fan, it’s not very pronounced. A simple cookie but with tons of flavor from the browned butter which gets deeper by the day, if you can save any!

  1. A beautiful photo of them…it just makes me want to make them all again, which I may do as these were a big hit here and I’m thinking they need to go on next year’s cookie tray at Christmas. You always do such a great job that I can hardly wait to get over here each week to see your post!
