This week’s recipe for Cook the Book Fridays comes from Dorie Greenspan’s cookbook, Everyday Dorie and was one I knew I wasn’t going to eat. I mean…. sardines? (If you’re new here, I don’t much like fish and especially really FISHY tasting ones like sardines…) But, in the spirit of cooking my way through all the recipes (because that’s what I do…), I planned on making it – just serving it to others LOL!
Honestly, this feels like a very odd mix of ingredients – pine nuts, fennel, sardines, basil, capers, raisins, lemon zest, tomatoes… there certainly is a LOT going on! A little internet research shows that this is also a traditional Sicilian dish and there are loads of recipes for variations on this recipe. Who knew?
The good news is that is comes together very quickly and I think that sans sardines this would be super tasty (for non-fish lovers). Neil ate this and told me that you “could barely taste” the sardines (riiiiiight!). Cleo, for her part, loved that we had to open a full can of sardines and then I only used about 1/4 of them. She loved the leftover sardine juice on her food (and maybe a bit of sardine or two as well!).
Would I make this again? Um, maybe. If I happened to have this very interesting combo of ingredients on hand (unlikely but you never know!). Definitely would love this with no fish factor!

Cleo & Mr. Neil always have a can of sardines at the ready. Just sayin’. 😉
I like your spirit of cooking every recipe in the book and offer your unique perspective on each. Cleo is a lucky cat!
We didnt know if we would like sardines or not (we didn’t)…and I omitted the raisins….but I have since made this again with shrimp and it was fantastic! Maybe try it with out fish…real tasty ingredients!
This would probably be delicious with anchovies… less fishy.
I think this would be good without the sardines too. I am glad that Cleo and Mr. Neil liked it.
Just reading the ingredients, it does appear an odd combination but, on the plate, you can never tell.
If there’s any left, I’ll help finish it off! I like that Cleo had a treat…we used to always give our kitties the water from the tuna can, and they went nuts whenever the can opener came out of the drawer. haha.
