This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe is Java Mini Mads from Dorie Greenspan’s Baking with Dorie.
Java Mini Mads are coffee-flavoured madeleines made in a more-accessible mini muffin tin (<<< affiliate link but this is my “go-to” mini muffin tin!). Madeleines are typically baked in shell-shaped moulds (<<< affiliate link but these are very good) but, just like financiers, which are traditionally baked in special moulds shaped like gold bars. Dorie eliminates the need to clutter the house with extra “stuff” by baking these madeleines in tins you probably already have around the house.

The most difficult thing about this recipe is that the batter does benefit from a long rest (at least 5 hours, if not overnight) in the fridge so while the batter takes no time at all to make, you won’t be able to enjoy them until later in the day/ the next day.
These were tasty but I think they definitely could have used more coffee flavour (I used instant coffee which typically provides a stronger flavour than these had, not sure what happened). They were lovely the day I made them but a little dry the next day (all the more reason to dunk them in a coffee, right?). I think I prefer financiers because the almond flour gives them a bit more of a moist texture.
What they did give me was a “to make” recipe – coffee financiers, coming up soon!

How amusing – did not realise these were “coffee” flavoured until I read the post. I guess it was subtle… 😉
I put in 2 teaspoons of instant espresso and mine baked up a little darker and coffee flavour was noticeable . I definitely will bake them the day I want to serve them.
Yes I put the full amount of instant espresso powder in as well which usually gives a big flavour. Not this time! *shrugs*
I look forward to your coffee financiers.
love that this has inspired you to take it to next level tastiness…will keep a look out for your financiers.
Always good to try a new recipe though, right?! It has inspired you for another creation, so yay!
Haven’t tried baking something like this especially with coffee as one of the ingredients but it looks like I might just have to give it a go! This looks awesome!
Oooh, coffee financiers – yes please!! I don’t mind cluttering up my kitchen with the mad mould because they are just so darn pretty.
