This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe comes from Baking with Dorie. Devil’s Food Party Cake was a recipe I voted for because I knew I had a birthday cake to make earlier this month! If you’ve been following along here for a while, you’ll know that I don’t often make full-sized baked goods and I’m the queen of minification!
This month, however, I DID make the whole (intimidating for me!) layer cake, serving 10 people! Go me!
To be fair, there’s nothing terribly difficult about making a full-sized cake but I always get in a mess icing and decorating big cakes and find them a bit of a faff, to be honest. But I had the time this month to take my time and it wasn’t too hard at all!
I made the cake gluten-free, using Bob’s Red Mill 1-to-1 Baking Flour (<<< affiliate link) and while it made the cake slightly denser than it was meant to be, everyone loved the “fudgy” quality!

The cake sliced BEAUTIFULLY – I let it sit in the fridge until about 30 minutes before serving and it was the perfect slicing and eating consistency. I was SO pleased with this one (as was Mr Neil whose birthday cake it was!).

Honestly, almost makes it worth getting a year older… 😉
How perfectly lovely! I love the way the plates complement the round sprinkles.
Looks like a chocolate lovers dream! Can’t wait to make this one!!
kinda looks like a brownie texture- yum!!
Happy Birthday Mr. Neil! I am not much of a cake decorator either but looks like you did a bang up job. I am glad that everyone liked your gluten free version.
The cake looks fabulous! It seems that the cake itself is more fudgy than crumbly.
What a beautiful and, of all things, gluten-free cake to celebrate Mr. Neil’s birthday!
