This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe comes from Dorie’s latest book, Dorie’s Anytime Cakes – out today!

That’s right – Dorie’s got ANOTHER book out and yes, I’ll be baking my way through it with the Tuesdays with Dorie gang!
About the book from the publisher:
From beloved James Beard Award–winning and New York Times bestselling author Dorie Greenspan—a vibrantly illustrated collection of recipes for simple yet most-memorable cakes
Over the years, Dorie has created thousands of excellent recipes. And out of all of them, the ones she always comes back to are the simplest cakes. Some may have a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of icing, but most of them are straight-from-the-oven cakes that are great as-is. They’re cakes that you probably already have all the ingredients for in your pantry. They’re the kinds of cakes you can whip up, put out and know that anyone with a hankering can come by and cut a sliver or a hunk. Any time.
With evocative writing, expert advice, and gorgeous illustrations by Nancy Pappas, Dorie’s Anytime Cakes celebrates the simple—but still exciting and special—with more than 100 recipes for easy-to-make, easy-to-love cakes.
There are recipes for all kinds of cakes, including loaves and rounds, muffins, crumbles, and Bundts—even savory cakes—plus frostings, fillings, and other flourishes:
- BFF Brownie Cake
- Morning, Noon, and Night Thanksgiving Cake
- Cafuné Corn Cake
- Simplest, Plainest, Most Old-Fashion—Also Best Tasting—Marble Cake
- Buttermilk Plum Cake
- Faux-caccia Squares
- Miso-Cheddar Scone Cake
- Feta, Sumac, and Za’atar Loaf
- The Devil’s Chocolate Cake
You’ll also find “Playing Around” suggestions throughout—Dorie’s inspirations for making each recipe to your own taste and right for all occasions. Flavor your sugar with citrus or tea for a special touch, spice your cake up with hot honey, or transform your plain cake into an impressive, layered party cake. Just like Dorie, you’ll return to baking these favorite cakes again and again.
I mean, it’s a Dorie book – how can you go wrong, right? Being ever the “minifier”, I was pleased to see there is a section on “Baby Cakes” (smaller cakes like cupcakes and madeleines) as well as “Salty Cakes’ (savoury cakes and treats). The other chapters are Loaf Cakes, Round Cakes, Bundt Cakes, Cakes with Corners (square and rectangle) and of course, there’s a wealth of information in the Backbone Basics section (ingredients, techniques and baking best practices). It’s written in the usual Dorie style – warm and encouraging – her words make you feel like you are baking along with Dorie in the kitchen!

In her usual generous form, Dorie’s given a shoutout to the Tuesdays with Dorie Bakers… with a lovely unexpected personal shoutout. Dorie – we love you!

I’ve made a couple of recipes from the book so far including today’s and can’t wait to bake more – we’ll be making 1 x cake per month until we’re finished with Baking with Dorie, then moving to 2 x month until we finish!

This week’s recipe was Cocoa-Swirled Pumpkin Bundt which I voted on because I thought it would be perfect for our small Thanksgiving gathering earlier this month (Canadian Thanksgiving in the second Monday in October). The original recipe serves 12 and is made in a 12-cup bundt pan (whcih I don’t have) which was way too big for our small gathering of 4 so I purchased a 6-cup silicone bundt pan (<<< affiliate link but it’s a perfect size and the cake didn’t stick!) and halved the recipe. It worked perfectly!
The cake is a pumpkin cake with a swirl of chocolate chips, sugar, cocoa powder and cinnamon through the middle. It’s a sweet, slightly spicy cake (with pumpkin pie-type spices) that would have been perfect on its own but for a special occasion, I dressed it up with a chocolate glaze.

I made this cake using gluten-free flour and you would not have known the difference. It was fluffy and moist and delicious – even a few days later. Disclosure – served more like 8 reasonable servings!

My swirl didn’t “swirl” much but who cased when it’s this delicious?
I can’t wait for there to be more cake in my life!

Looks perfect Mardi! Mark wants the chocolate drizzle on his next time after seeing yours and Steph’s so I’m guessing that’s next as I’m going to make it again and take it to Thanksgiving in a few weeks. So fun to see your name in the book. You are a champion making all the recipes all the time…I’ve been more and sometimes less in all the groups from the very beginning but never intended to do all the recipes like you do. You are a champion!
that look so good, and bring on the glaze! super excited to bake everything in here, too. love the “cakes with corners” chapter heading 🙂
Oh I like the looks of that chocolate glaze! Good call!
Congratulations on the shout out in Dorie’s cookbook. Looks like you got a personalized early copy. So lovely to keep baking with you through another cookbook.
