Tuesdays with Dorie (Baking Chez Moi): Alsatian Christmas Bread

Baking Chez Moi Dorie Greenspan Alsatian Christmas Bread on eatlivetravelwrite.comThis week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe from Baking Chez Moi is an easier version of fruitcake (and, bonus, doesn’t take weeks of prep!). It’s not a bread in the traditional sense of the word – it doesn’t have any yeast or flour – it’s just made from dried fruit and nuts.

Basically you soak a whole lotta dried fruit in some spiced orange juice until it’s super soft (mine never got to the “paste” like consistency that I imagined it would from the recipe description) then mix it with some almond flour  and it’s meant to form a log that bakes together. All this is very well in theory but I don’t think I cut my fruit finely enough because my log never really stayed together either pre, during or post-bake 🙁 It was, however, delicious!

I ate this as is – it’s like the best homemade energy bar – and with a little Brie spread on top (so good!) and gifted the rest to a gluten-free neighbour. It’s a great edible holiday hostess gift (as long as it sticks together!) and because it is gluten free, vegan and dairy free, it’s very inclusive for the holidays!

  1. I found it had a bit of an aftertaste that I wasn’t too fond of. Initially really like it, but then it didn’t feel memorable and there was just this unpleasant taste on my tongue that kind of lingered. So, didn’t have the WOW factor for me. Perhaps soaking the fruit in something with alcohol might add additional flavour, to override the other….
