This week the boys made Jamie Oliver’s Angry Pasta Fagioli from his latest book, Veg – releasing October 22nd in the US/ Canada. We’re cooking from the UK version (because, metric and also because I’m impatient and couldn’t wait an extra couple of months for release date here!).
It’s a fairly simple recipe but one with lots of jobs which, when you have 10 boys cooking is necessary!
Butternut squash, carrot, garlic and onions…
The boys are crushing penne here to make irregular pasta shapes.
The veg got cooking (with a jalapeño – not the type of chili Jamie calls for but the only one I could find!)
The pepper adds a subtle heat (I didn’t want it to be too hot).
After the veg has cooked a while, you add the garlic and onion…
And then some tomatoes and white beans…
This session we had a good amount of time so we made sure to taste as we went…
We talked a lot about seasoning the food and the risks of over-salting (you can never take salt out of a dish but you can add more!) and the boys enjoyed a few tastes along the way!
We added the pasta and let it cook away as we cleaned up and read the recipe! Around 20 minutes later…
A hearty, healthy bowl of goodness! I personally think it could have used some greens (and the boys felt it could have used Parmesan!) but all in all, a pretty GREAT dish to welcome Fall! Yes, your kids can make dinner for you!

Disclosure: I have been a contributor to JamieOliver.Com, and was a Food Revolution “Super Ambassador” for Canada for 6 years, though I was supporting Jamie’s cause well before I was doing any of those things. If you’ve followed this blog for a while, you’ll know how much of a Jamie fan I am and how strongly I believe in his message. I was not asked to write about this book, I purchased it myself.

I really like the look of this – looks as if it would be very satisfying on a cold day.
In the original recipe, Jamie grinds up some fresh rosemary with a little olive oil and salt and drizzles it across. Well worth adding!
Yes, I know but we only had an hour and it was busy busy busy!!
