This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe comes from Baking with Dorie. Cottage Berry Cobbler is the perfect recipe for early July in Ontario as berries are just coming into season (strawberries have already been gracing the shelves of our produce stores and market stands for a few weeks!).
For this recipe, I chose to use frozen blueberries as I’m working my way through our freezer and because they are grown in Canada, it’s a nod to local. I love frozen berries and keep them on hand in the freezer year-round because they are locally grown and flash-frozen at the height of ripeness but for some reason, there is a glut of berries in my freezer right now and we need the space! But what berries/ fruit to pair with this? A friend happened to wander by offering jostaberries from her garden allotment at the time when I was planning to make this recipe so I couldn’t resist.
Josta-what? Don’t worry, I had never heard of them before either! Jostaberries are a cross between a gooseberry and a blackcurrant.
They are a little sweeter than gooseberries but still have some tartness so I figured they would work well with blueberries which would counter that tartness (I couldn’t have used JUST the jostaberries). I used 3/4 jostaberries and 1/4 blueberries and made 1/4 of the recipe in total for a “serves 2” portion (actually stretched it to 4 smaller servings on 2 hot evenings and it was perfect). For the fruit part of this recipe, I used a light sprinkle of sugar only as the blueberries were SO sweet and it was the perfect balance. The biscuit topping contains no sugar except on the top to finish (I used raw sugar) so you do need to make sure your fruit has enough sweetness. The biscuits, though a sticky dough, were light and fluffy and soaked in lots of berry juice – perfect!
We enjoyed this as is, but ice cream or heavy cream would pair well too (we just didn’t have any on hand and ate it before I could get to the store!).
I’m normally more a Crisp/ Crumble type person but this recipe is a keeper too!

I have never heard of a Jostaberry either, glad to have learned something new. My husband would agree with you on the liking crisp or crumbled more but I liked this one.
Now I know more about jostaberry. A mixed berry is a good formula to keep. We’re never tire of anything with berries in it.
I learned something new! Sounds like a perfect combo. Glad you both enjoyed it! 😍
Jostaberries sound perfect! I want to hunt some down to see what they taste like.
Yum
sounds like a great combo– hopefully I’ll come across these jostberries somewhere this summer!
Jostaberries are new to me. Your cobbler looks devine.
