This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe from Dorie’s Cookies was Gozinaki (p 239). They are sweet (very sweet) candy-like squares as opposed to cookies and, a bonus when it’s 40˚C, they do not require turning the oven on!
Dorie says:
Gozinaki is one of those interesting recipes. It was sent to me by Kim Allen, a Californian, and it came to her in the nicest way. When her daughter was a freshman in college on the East Coast, she returned home for Christmas break with her roommate, Nano Liklikadze, a young woman from Georgia (the country, not the state). During her stay, Nano made gozinaki, a cookie that was part of her holiday tradition, and Kim, bless her, took notes. Depending on your perspective, gozinaki can be a confection or a cookie – I’m going with cookie, in part because it reminds of something my Russian grandmother made, and she called it a cookie. It’s essentially toasted walnuts held together with a honey syrup and then cut into diamond shapes.
Yeah, so ok. I made 1/4 of this recipe to make six. I didn’t cut them in diamond shapes because I found it hard enough to cut them – they are VERY sticky and it was VERY hot the day I made them. They come together really fast and I think they would make an excellent holiday/ Christmas treat – dipped in chocolate (one of the “bonnes idées” Dorie suggests). I’d like to try them with almonds and maybe some dried fruit (ok, so making them a different type of treat altogether LOL!).

Loved the simplicity of these but a small square goes a long way!

I think dipping them in chocolate would be a good idea!
i also think some chocolate would be spot-on!
These were delish. I do like the sound of them dipped in chocolate – yum.
Dipping in chocolate sounds like a great idea!
I am so honored for my recipe to be in your cookbook. Love Nano
THanks Nano – it’s Dorie Greenspan who included the recipe in her book, we just made it with the Tuesdays with Dorie group!
