See that ^^^ up there? Kids making gnocchi. Magical, right?
This week Les Petits Chefs worked with a recipe from Ren Behan’s Wild Honey and Rye (which I reviewed here). I’ve been bookmarking recipes to try once I have a bit more free time on my hands but as soon as I saw the recipe for Polish Gnocchi with Bacon and Mushrooms, I knew I wanted to try it with the boys. These are made with cooked, mashed and cooled mashed potatoes, flour and egg. The boys were amazed that those ingredients were enough to make soft little pillows of gnocchi (these are called “kopytkaz” in Polish which means “little hooves” referring to the shape. Lots of the boys were excited to make these while others were simply excited to cut up the bacon to serve with them đ
And thinly (kinda) sliced onions…
And got sautĂ©eing…
Meanwhile, over on team gnocchi….
The boys worked away at their various stations and a few of them finished their tasks and got to cooking the gnocchi. They were amazed to see how when they were cooked they rose to the surface of the simmering water – no timing necessary. It really was “magic”.
The recipe calls for the dumplings to be added to the pans with the mushrooms, bacon and onions but we had a few different issues preventing that – namely very small frying pans and also we needed to keep the bacon separate for some of our vegetarian friends so we ended up mixing the dumplings with the onions and mushrooms and adding the bacon separately as a garnish. No parsley in the Petits Chefs fridge this week but we had spring onions to garnish as well. Looked pretty!
Already looks good, huh? But what about with BACON?
So. VERY. good. I need to make this again soon! It’s perfect cold weather fare (and bonus? I have mashed potatoes flat frozen in my freezer just waiting for the weekend!). This was a hit with a lot of the boys as well – judging by how many of them were sneaking dumplings from their containers on their way out of the lab. Definitely a fun way to enjoy mashed potatoes and get kids cooking đ
