This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe comes from Dorie’s latest book, Dorie’s Anytime Cakes! Maybe-This, Maybe-That Ham and Cheese Loaf is the perfect Sunday bake! It’s a classic French “Cake Salé” (literally: salty cake but actually “savoury”) which is often served in small cubes with an apéro.
This one is fairly flexible in terms of what you can put in it (hence it’s name) – here we use 3 kinds of cheese (mozzarella, Fontina and Parmesan), ham (I used bacon), roasted red peppers, thyme and chives or scallions (which I forgot – no big deal!). It comes together easily (had to cook the bacon a bit before I used it so that added some time but you could totally use ham or something already cooked here) and it makes the house smell AMAZING while it’s baking!

Result is a beautiful loaf with lovely pockets of cheesy goodness, some saltiness from the bacon and some sweetness from the roasted red peppers. I *did* miss the crunch of the scallions for texture but if you didn’t know they were supposed to be there, you wouldn’t.
I love this type of recipe as it’s practically one bowl and easy to prepare but looks and tastes like you’ve spent much more time on it – my kinda recipe!). I am planning on eating this toasted with some scrambled eggs and fried tomatoes later this week when it’s a bit past it’s prime and already can’t wait!
