Another recipe from In the French kitchen with kids this week – a version of one of their favourite foods – mac & cheese, only way better!
The Gratin de Pâtes au Jambon (Cheesy Pasta Bake) in the book involves a creamy béchamel sauce which is something many adults don’t like to make because they think it’s “hard’. The boys did an amazing job with this – fairly unsupervised, actually…
They measured flour…
Melted butter, added the flour and then started adding warm milk…
Doesn’t that look just about perfect?
They added grated cheese to the sauce and it was all we could do to not eat the sauce right out of the pot!
Meanwhile, “Team Ham” got to work doing an excellent job of chopping the ham into even-sized pieces
We added the ham to the cooked pasta…
Seasoned the pasta with salt and pepper…
And then scooped it into individual portions, then topped with Panko breadcrumbs…
They just need a few minutes in the oven to brown the tops…
Et voilà! Perfect mac & cheese in well under an hour – and “so much better than the stuff in the box” – out of the mouths of babes… I’d say that’s a win, right?
