Les Petits Chefs make fish tacos with Matt Basile at Lisa Marie

As soon as the boys found out where they were headed on a field trip for cooking club this week, they immediately asked “Are we going to deep fry something?”  Matt Basile, chef/ owner of Lisa Marie restaurant and the popular food truck, Priscilla (also a rock star in the boys’ eyes), is popularly known in cooking club circles as “deep fried pizza guy”. The first time we visited, the boys made deep fried mini meatball pizzas (hence the nickname), then Buffalo chicken patty melts and last time, we made bacon and egg nachos.   The boys LOVE visiting Lisa Marie because Matt is so much fun, makes awesome food and has a wall full of graffiti on the way to the washroom that they love to read 😉

Matt’s also the author of a cookbook and happens to be catering a charity dinner themed on his book for me in a few weeks.  I was choosing the menu on the weekend for this dinner and in my “research”, I bookmarked pretty much most of the book as potential menu items. One item I marked but realised we couldn’t make due to lack of deep fryer at the dinner location was fish tacos so I was thrilled when he emailed me “Fish tacos for the boys?”. I was over the moon!  The boys would also make guacamole and a couple of different salsas to top the tacos and we got right to work as soon as we arrived.

Except maybe when you get to use the eye bath because you have wiped jalapeño fingers in your eyes. Thankfully noone did this. We did let Matt cut the jalapeõs though…

Thank you Matt for welcoming us into your kitchen once again (and on a day when you were do busy with other catering prep!). The boys love working with you and your enthusiasm for cooking is infectious.  I don’t think I’m wrong when I say anyone who cooks with Matt comes away thinking “Hey, cooking is cool!” You make it look so easy 😉

    Mmmm…I was thinking of these, smacking my lips, when Mardi and I went through Street Food Diaries on the weekend. Wish I had been there with the boys! 🙂

    Looking forward to our charity dinner event: once again, Matt shows how generous the chef community is.
