This month’s Kraft Canada #whatscooking assignment was to check out some back to school recipes which, reluctantly I will admit, it’s time to do. I’m doing some training courses this week and next week we are back at school for professional development week and then classes resume after Labour Day. Yikes! Where did the summer go? In any case, after 7 weeks in Europe, I’m needing a little routine in my life and that starts with a little more menu planning and a little less over-indulgence.
September and the start of school always signals a lot of busy-ness and sometimes it’s hard to keep on track eating more healthfully. When I am busy, smoothies are my go-to “on the go” food. They don’t take much time to whip up and can easily be customised according to what’s on hand. The recipe I am sharing today is based on this chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie – I’ve added in oats and used plain peanut butter, skim milk and cocoa powder so I can control the amount of chocolate flavour. I’ve used a Dutch-process cocoa powder which gives a mellow, rich flavour.
Chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie with oats
Tasty, healthy smoothie with peanut butter, oats and banana and a touch of cocoa powder.
- 1/2 cup skim milk
- 1 small or 1/2 medium banana
- 1 tablespoon Dutch process or unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon Kraft smooth peanut butter
- 4 tablespoons rolled oats (large flake, not the quick cooking kind)
- Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth and creamy.
Verdict? This was easy to prepare and tasted great. Definitely a wonderful base smoothie with lots of opportunities to customise this with different nut butters, seeds or even fruits. It tastes like a treat but it actually has a good amount of protein to keep you going on a busy day.
