Happy “World Nutella Day″ ! Yup, it’s a thing! Originally created by Sara from Ms. Adventures in Italy and Michelle from Bleeding Espresso, World Nutella Day is a day to celebrate, get creative with, and most importantly, eat Nutella. In 2015, Sara transferred World Nutella® Day to Ferrero (the makers of Nutella®) to help it live on and grow for years to come.
It’s the 15th iteration of this auspicious day and my 12th year participating.
In 2010 I made a Nutella cheesecake, in 2011 I made Nutella lamingtons, in 2012 I went French with Nutella macarons craquelés, in 2013, I made Nutella truffle pops. in 2014 I made a flourless hazelnut-chocolate Nutella-inspired cake, in 2015 I made a chocolate-hazelnut smoothie in 2016, I made Nutella éclairs, in 2017 I made Nutella pots de crème, in 2018 I made Chocolate -Hazelnut Financiers, in 2019, I made Nutella Twists and Palmiers and last year I made Chocolate Hazelnut Bliss Bites.
This year, I’ve gone SUPER SIMPLE with a snack I came up with a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been teaching from home since the start of January and on some days, teach 5 classes with only short breaks in between. I’m always looking for snacks I can make/ eat quickly and the weather being what it is, hot chocolate is often my afternoon go-to. But one afternoon I was setting out ingredients for some recipe development later in the day and thinking about what I was going to snack on and my eye fell on the pot of Nutella and all of a sudden, I wondered about simply heating milk/ cream and mixing in Nutella to make a different type of hot chocolate.
I tried it and, wow – it’s comforting and creamy and just sweet enough. The PERFECT afternoon snack!
Nutella hot chocolate
Easy Nutella hot chocolate
Ingredients
for the hot chocolate
- 1 heaping tablespoon Nutella
- 60ml (1/4 cup) skim milk
- 60ml (1/4 cup) heavy (35%) cream
for garnish
- 2 large marshmallows, cut in halves
- 1 tablespoon Nutella
Instructions
- Put the Nutella in a small pot and pour the milk and cream on top.
- Place the pot over medium-high heat and gently whisk until the Nutella is completely melted.
- Once the Nutella is melted, turn down the heat to medium and continue to cook for 2 to 3 minutes, whisking constantly. The liquid will thicken slightly as it cooks.
- Remove the pot from the heat. Allow the hot chocolate to sit for a minute (it will thicken slightly as it cools) and stir before you pour into the mug.
- Melt the second tablespoon of Nutella in a microwave (at 50-60% for about 1 minute, until liquidy)
- Press the chopped marshmallows into the melted Nutella cut side down, and float on top of the hot chocolate

Not just marshmallows – but HUGE marshmallows! Isn’t there a #hotchocolatelaw that says you have to use the mini ones? And white – no colours. 😉
Cut large marshmallows are so much better than small ones!
