A Vineyard for Two

A Vineyard for Two cover on eatlivetravelwrite.comThis is part of my Summer Reads series where I’ll be reviewing a series of “not just cookbooks”.

This week’s pick, A Vineyard for Two, by Laura Bradbury, is a perfect summer read: a little bit of armchair travel, a romance, a few plot twists and did I mention it’s set in Burgundian vineyards?

About the book:

Up-and-coming winemaker Cerise Desloires believes in soul mates. Trouble is, she’s sure she’s already found—and lost—hers. Now the young widow has inherited half the vineyard she considers her own, and she’s got one chance to produce a vintage that could make or break her career. But when the flashy, impetuous Clovis de Valois is revealed as heir to the other half, her dreams of independence are dashed into chaos.

Cerise and Clovis seem to be opposites in every way that matters. Can their passion for winemaking—and secretly each other—unite them beyond their differences? Or will their clash ruin the vineyard, and the hearts, they’re both desperate to save?

Written by Laura Bradbury, of The Grape Series (memoirs – I’ve written about them here), A Vineyard for Two is the first in a new series, The Winemakers Trilogy, and Laura’s first fictional work. After feeling I know all about Laura’s life through The Grape Series, I was keen to see what she would do with fiction. In fact, I still very much recognise Laura’s “voice” in this book – just as she has with her autobiographical works, here, she brings Burgundy and more specifically, life on a Burgundian vineyard, to your armchair.

The book is a peek into winemaking and all that goes along with it – wine tasting, the back-breaking work of the harvest, managing the people who come for harvest, making the wine and, for Cerise, being a single mum at the same time. It’s a delightful read that really is a feast for the senses and you’ll be transported to those vineyards just a few pages in. It’s hard to speak to the plot without giving too much away but if you’re after an easy read for your summer vacation and love France, French food and wine and a little bit of romance, this is the book for you! Definitely a little “fluffy” but that is exactly what you need to accompany your rosé on a patio this summer, n’est-ce pas? Escapism at its best!
