French Fridays: Sunday morning market in La Croix-Rousse (Lyon)

They say a picture is worth a thousand words but I always have trouble conveying what I experience as I travel in just a few images per blog post. This summer, I’ve been experimenting with little videos which I hope are helpful in showing you exactly what I am seeing and hearing (sadly, smell-o-vision is not a reality yet!).

A couple of weeks ago, I visited Lyon for the first time with Jennifer (read her thoughts here) and we were treated to a whirlwind tour of a very magical city by the wonderful Lucy Vanel who runs Plum Lyon, a cooking school offering basic French cuisine classes (specialising in Lyonnaise food), pastry classes and market table classes (which include a morning visit to the outdoor market, the neighborhood fromagerie and boulangerie). Unwittingly, on the Sunday morning, Lucy gave us a taste of her market table class as we made our way through two outdoor markets, checked out the fromagerie and boulangerie and headed back to the school where Lucy prepared a fabulous lunch with the fresh ingredients we’d picked up from the market. Because it’s not just what Lucy does on a day when she has classes – it’s the French way of life that she embraces and celebrates daily.

Interested in Lucy’s classes? Check out the Plum Lyon website!

Disclosure: Lucy is a friend but did not ask me to mention her school or classes. I am always happy to share friends’ awesome projects that I think my readers will be interested in and personally, I’ll be making a beeline for Lyon and Plum as soon as I can!

I love hearing the voices of the shoppers and the vendors in your video. Makes me feel like I’m right there in the hustle and bustle.
Do they scold you if you dare touch the fruit (like the peaches)? I got scolded by a market vendor in Germany when I dared to touched a peach. It was frightening. Needless to say, I bought the peach 😉

Hey Janice, it’s definitely custom to ask “je peux me servir?” if you are not sure. I never touch any produce without asking!
