Giveaway: Where to Go When (Canada) (CLOSED)

Where to go when cover on eatlivetravelwrite.com

Real travel does require a bit of work

So says Craig Doyle, the consultant editor for Dorling Kindersley’s Where to Go When. And he’s right. But planning travel isn’t the kind of work you dread. At least I don’t! I LOVE to spend hours poring over guide books and websites planning trips, figuring out transportation and making sure that I’ll be making the most of my trip (nothing worse than arriving somewhere and finding out you’ve missed a major event by a day or so OR planning a trip too late and realising that there is no accommodation because there is a major event happening!). Planning is key to successful travel!

Where to Go When features over 130 destinations and the best times to visit them.  It combines six different vacation themes – Natural World, Unforgettable Journeys, Family Vacations, Luxury & Romance, Activity Breaks, and Festivals & Culture organised in a month-by-month format which makes finding the ideal getaway (for the time of year you are travelling) easy. You can  search by time of year you are travelling or the type of vacation you are interested in – or, if you are not travelling anytime soon, simply flip through the pages and read it like a regular book – and be inspired (I don’t know about you but I read guide books like novels!).

Wondering where it’s at for February? As I’m wading through book-writing myself right now with a looming deadline, I know I catch myself dreaming at my desk every now and then! Well, according to Where to Go When, it’s the right month to visit Antarctica (!), Cambodia, Ottawa, Havana, Zermatt, Thailand, Agra, the Florida Keys, New Zealand’s North Island, Brazil or travel along the Inter-American Highway. So much choice!

I was particularly drawn to the idea of Havana (having travelled there over 10 years ago, I’d love to see it now) and looked up what’s happening there right now. Apparently February is the driest, least humid month – that’s a huge bonus for me and definitely a good reason to choose now to visit.  As with each destination suggested, the book gives a wonderful two page spread featuring basic information on how to get there, where to stay and eat, some travel dos and don’ts as well as a suggested 5-night itinerary. No, it’s not a comprehensive travel guide but it’s an excellent starting point for someone planning a trip with some great information pointing you in the right direction of things to research.

There’s a short Practical Travel section in the back of the book offering the sort of information you’ll be used to seeing in the DK Eyewitness Guides (health, safety, insurance, passports, visas, money, useful contacts, photography, internet access when travelling, cell phones when travelling and transportation) as well as a short section on travel and its impact on the environment (with tips on how you can reduce your carbon footprint) which is a a big concern for many these days. There’s also a section on weather around the world which is definitely a big consideration for travellers (assuming you have a choice of when you can travel).

In short, it’s a wonderful way to step away from the doldrums of grey, wintery February (if you are me), and provides much inspiration for planning future trips!

Not that I’m Canadian but off to Singapore in September for the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Not really my cup of tea but there is food, shopping, food, cooking schools and lots to see other than noisy cars. And did I mention food!!!!!

we don’t have the opportunity to travel, really – I love to explore through books though! We do have to go to Syracuse in May, and may be travelling to Halifax in the summer for a family visit. I get a bit nervous travelling; I am always filled with ‘what-ifs’; however, maybe someday…
