If you’ve been following me on Instagram or know me in real life, you’ll know that I took up running in 2018. I’ve run 5 races this year and am slowly turning into what you might call a “runner” (as in, I bring my running things on vacation with me…). What you might not know is that the Toronto Humane Society is partly responsible for this newfound interest!
That’s right, on the heels of my second Camino leg last summer, I found myself signing up to WALK the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon 5km race last October. I figured that I was walking 20km+ per day on the Camino and I could totally walk 5km in around an hour PLUS I could raise some funds for one of my favourite charities, the Toronto Humane Society.
In fact, once I got to the start line, adrenaline kicked in and I ended up running most of the race and did it in a respectable 38 minutes (considering I had not ever run before that, it’s not bad!) and wondered if maybe I didn’t actually hate running after all 😉 I signed up for a Running Room clinic starting in January this year and haven’t looked back!
This year, I’m not running the Scotiabank 5km but I’m actually signed up to WALK the half-marathon! Yes it’s a category, no I cannot walk/ run as it’s a WALKING category. I knew that with my book coming out this summer that there would be a bunch of media and events in the fall as well and I simply don’t have the time to commit to training for such a big running race (maybe one day, not this year). Walking a half-marathon to raise more funds for the Humane Society? I can do that!

Toronto Humane Society Scotiabank Charity Challenge 2018
The Toronto Humane Society will be taking part in the Scotiabank Charity Challenge for the fourth consecutive year on Sunday, October 21st 2018 and you’re welcome to join their pack of runners and walkers! In the last three years, their team has grown to over 160 participants and they’ve raised over $65,000 to help the animals in their care.

You don’t have to be an elite runner to participate. You can participate in the full marathon, half marathon or 5K race/walk and raise funds and awareness for the animals at the Toronto Humane Society! Whether you choose to run, jog, walk, or donate, every step you take will be another step towards saving the life of a homeless animal in Toronto.
