The best bolognese sauce (NOT your mum’s!)

Ok I have a culinary confession to make…

Sometimes neither of us cooks dinner. Life just kind of gets in the way. Especially at this time of year (if you are a teacher you will know what I mean!), there just does not seem to be enough time to fit in the job, the yoga, the having fun, the napping and the cooking etc..

So we have a secret weapon to guard against times like these and to ensure our diet is not exclusively Swiss Chalet or pizza (though they do have their place too…).

Out secret? It’s called Todaysmenu and it’s based right here in Toronto!

From their website:

Quality prepared meals for delivery or pick up.

When you have no time to cook, try our range of healthy dinners.

Today’s Menu offers deliciously prepared meals cooked by our chefs at our location, with the unbeatable convenience of either delivery or pick up. Meals are made fresh daily and quick/flash frozen to lock in flavour: all you have to do is heat and serve.

Healthy and convenient

We know there’s a lot more to prepared meals then great flavour. That’s why we place the highest priority on healthy recipes. Our meals are low in sodium prepared without preservatives, MSG or any artificial ingredient. Now you can enjoy your dinner even more, knowing it’s so much better for you and your family than ordering in or supermarket meals.

We happened upon this about 3 years ago when I was looking for a gift for some new parent friends of ours. Since then, we have given food gifts to many friends and ordered a few times ourselves! The food tastes home-cooked and fresh and it’s great to know that you can pull something from the freezer that’s healthy and delicious.

I don’t think we’ve had one meal that we didn’t like and one of our favourites is the “best bolognese sauce”. It’s made with BACON, of course it’s delicious!

Love the name!

Up close!

Last night we succumbed – Neil was at tennis and I was at yoga so no real time to cook when we got home (and on the last day of school for me, not much motivation either!). In 15 minutes we had a delicious meal plus leftovers, averaging about $4 a serve if you count in the pasta and parmesan. Can’t beat that!

Expect more reviews over the next little while – we took advantage of the $99 special which was two sauces (pesto and bolognese) serving three plus four main courses serving four – for that price, it’s worth it knowing you have something decent to fall back on when you just don’t have time to cook. If you live in Toronto, I heartily reccoment them. If you don’t, you can always purchase a gift certificate for someone who does live here (umm, like me!)

  1. Mmmmmm. What can I say: Mardi's right, they've been a success every time.

Well, there's ONE dish I wasn't particularly fond of, and thought was a bit weak – but that's relative, against their usual sublime standard.

  2. i like the name of the sauce too. 😉 and of course if it has bacon in it, it must be good, right? i love having meals like this tucked away in the freezer for days when you don't feel like cooking or simply don't have time.
