This is part of my Summer Reads series where I’ll be sharing book recommendations – a series of “not just cookbooks”.
What’s summer without a few good romance reads, right? This week’s #summerreads pick is just that, but also so much more. I first heard about this book when I heard Carley Fortune speak in Toronto and an audience member asked her what she recommended for summer reading. I had not heard of Paige Toon before – this was my first but not last read of hers!
From the publisher:
Liv and Finn meet six summers ago working in a bar on the rugged Cornish coastline, their futures full of promise. When a night of passion ends in devastating tragedy they are bound together inextricably. But Finn’s life is in LA with his band, and Liv’s is in Cornwall with her family – so they make a promise. Finn will return every year, and if they are single they will spend the summer together.
This summer Liv crosses paths with Tom – a mysterious new arrival in her hometown. As the wildflowers and heather come into bloom, they find themselves falling for one another. For the first time Liv can imagine a world where her heart isn’t broken every autumn. Now Liv must make an impossible choice. And when she discovers the shocking reason that Tom has left home, she’ll need to trust her heart even more . . .
Ah! What a fun read that I chose to start on the first day of summer! Well, and finished it too – I tore through this in one day! I love that this was set in Cornwall, something a little bit different than the usual romances – it made me want to hop on a plane and visit immediately!
It’s what I’d call a rollercoaster of a book, sure, it’s a summer romance but there’s a lot going on behind that storyline. Set in the present and each summer up until 7 years ago, this is an easy-to-navigate read, though it does hop back and forth in time. I loved reading about the present day and then seeing what had happened in the past that led to certain situations. And the ending? Well, you’ll just have to read that for yourself…
Not your average summer rom-com – and that’s why I loved it.
