Sobeys Inc. recently unveiled a new way for busy Canadians to plan meals and organize their weekly shopping with the launch of its new free mobile app for iPhone and Android. Featuring hundreds of easy to prepare recipes, new ingredients to discover and instant access to a personalised weekly flyer, the app makes it easy to shop for fresh, tasty and seasonal food and can potentially save you time and money.
You know when you’re in the grocery store after work, wondering what to cook for dinner? Here’s where the Sobeys app comes in handy, highlighting a favourite recipe of the week, in addition to the hundreds of other recipe ideas in the app. The simple search feature in the “Get Cooking” section makes meal planning on the spot (i.e. in the supermarket!) quick and easy and lists not only ingredients (with the option to add them to a saved shopping list) and directions for each dish but also nutritional information. You can filter search results around the type of meal you are looking for (lunch, dinner, breakfast etc…), any dietary restrictions, the type of cuisine you are interested in and also filter based on the occasion you are cooking for. Warning, it’s easy to get a little lost in the app meaning, one idea leads to another…
Introducing the smart shopping list!
The app’s built-in shopping list is designed to help you get organized and save time. A great feature of this is that you can log in from any device to access the same list – so from your tablet, laptop or smart phone. You can add ingredients from the featured recipes to your list or add items from your flyer. Add any other item to your list as well (not from the flyer or app recipes). When you’re in the store, you can check off items as you buy them.
Your weekly flyer – on the go!
Once you’ve selected your local store, the app provides anytime, anywhere access to the Sobeys weekly flyer, allowing you to search for items easily, and even filter the flyer by department. You can add items to your shopping list directly from the flyer.
Your Club Sobeys offers – in the palm of your hand
If you’re a Club Sobeys member, you’ll be able to access personalized offers in the “My Offers” section of the app. Click on the offers you want to have loaded to your Club Sobeys card (similar to the way you would in the online version) and when you take advantage of those offers in-store, you’ll earn bonus Club Sobeys points.
I’ve spent a couple of weeks getting to know the Sobeys app and there are definitely some features I enjoy. Sobeys is the closest supermarket to my house so I was able to easily test out the functionality whilst just going about my regular grocery shopping routine. Full disclosure – Neil and I use a delivery service for a lot of our grocery shopping but I find I am using that mainly for heavier items (I don’t drive and Neil doesn’t like to grocery shop unless we are in a foreign country!) and so our local Sobeys is where I buy most of my day-to-day grocery items.
I’ve enjoyed the shopping list feature as, quite often during my commute, I remember items I need to purchase on the way home or I am planning a dish for my boys’ cooking club and making a list of ingredients I need. These notes end up in my email (sometimes as separate emails) and more often than not, later in the day, you’ll find me in the store scrolling through my emails looking for the elusive “one with all the ingredients”. The shopping list on the app is pretty useful in this respect. As I said earlier, the recipe browsing can be a bit of a time sink, but in a good way!
I have to be honest and say I found a few glitches and there are a couple of things that I wish they did differently. Even though I am a Club Sobeys member and have signed up online for an account that is linked to my CS card number, I had to re-register via my phone (a simple matter of scanning the card number but annoying that it wouldn’t let me log in with my regular online login details). The app sometimes randomly quits of its own accord although that might not be a fault of the app itself as I’ve noticed after a recent update to my iOS that a few apps are doing this. Anyway, the shopping list info seems to save ok even when it quits unexpectedly. I wish you could have the option of saving a shopping list on an ongoing basis – you know, a “basic needs” list that you could access and load up, adding and subtracting items as necessary. Finally, I wish you could use your phone in place of the physical Club Sobeys card when shopping in the store. One less thing to carry, right? I am hoping these last two features might be a considered in future versions of the app.
All in all though, a very promising app – I look forward to watching its functionality grow in future versions!
