This week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe from Dorie’s Cookies is a slightly festive cookie (I think almonds, chocolate and cranberries count as festive, right?) that I loved the sound and look of in the book but which I had a little trouble with making look *quite* as pretty as Dorie’s.
Dorie says:
Nothing makes me happier than packing cookies with extra flavor, a couple of different textures and a surprise. And so I added dried cranberries to the Do-Almost-Anything Chocolate Dough and then topped the cookies with a surprise: sweet almond meringue crunch.
Ok, so I also love the idea of the chocolate cookie dough studded with cranberries topped with sliced almonds (what Dorie uses in the book) dipped in egg white and icing sugar to form a sort of “meringue”. As you can see, I used slivered almonds as that is what I had on hand and though I thought I had mostly drained the “meringue” off the nuts before I placed them on the cookies to bake, it looks like I didn’t – the “meringue” kind of pooled all over the top of the cookies making for a much less attractive version of these than you’ll find in the book but no less delicious! To pretty them up a bit, I added some chopped pieces of cranberries to the top just after they came out of the oven so they didn’t look quite so much of a disaster 😉
I’d definitely make these again, paying more attention to the meringue/ almonds but also love the idea of adding in chopped almond to the dough with the cranberries – think that could look pretty AND taste great!

MY BOOK! In the French kitchen with kids is out now! Click here for details and how to order!
Mine look like yours! I had egg white spilling off the sides, despite believing that I had drained them well. But hey, as you say, they taste good!
oh, they look quite good to me! i actually didn’t realize that’s what goes on with the topping (i made the other cookie), so i’ll keep this in mind.
I had trouble draining all the meringue too! It isn’t so easy as it glops together. I like the festive touch of the cranberries on top!
I am glad that you liked these. My almond lover is looking forward to them.
