Meatless Monday: Veg by Jamie Oliver

Welcome to (mostly) Meatless Monday – a series of cookbook reviews focussing on books that are “vegetable-forward” (if not completely vegetarian) for those of us who are trying to reduce our meat consumption (or at least, eat meat more consciously).

Jamie Oliver Veg on eatlivetravelwrite.comAbout his latest cookbook, Veg, I think Jamie Oliver says it best: “It’s all about celebrating really good, tasty food that just happens to be meat-free.” Also: “Super-tasty, easy, accessible and affordable.” I mean, what more could you want from a cookbook, vegetarian or not?

From the publisher:

From simple suppers and family favourites, to weekend dishes for sharing with friends, this book is packed full of phenomenal food – pure and simple.

Whether it’s embracing a meat-free day or two each week, living a vegetarian lifestyle, or just wanting to try some brilliant new flavour combinations, this book ticks all the boxes.

With chapters on Soups & Sarnies, Brunch, Pies Parcels & Bakes, Curries & Stews, Salads, Burgers & Fritters, Pasta, Rice & Noodles, and Traybakes there’s something tasty for every occasion.

Sharing simple tips and tricks that will excite the taste buds, this book will give you the confidence to up your veg intake and widen your recipe repertoire, safe in the knowledge that it’ll taste utterly delicious. It will also leave you feeling full, satisfied and happy – and not missing meat from your plate.

The book has a permanent place on my kitchen table these days as I find it very useful when I’m thinking of what to make for dinner based on whatever veg I have on hand. Really trying to use up what I have, so books like this where I can look up recipes by ingredient are super useful when planning menus.

Cauliflower cheese pizza from VEG on eatlivetravelwrite.com(that time I had a lovely tiny cauliflower in my organic box, I made the Cauliflower Cheese Pizza)

I started bookmarking recipes that I was interested in making but stopped as I realised that I was literally bookmarking everything! So, instead of working my way through it, I use it as I have ingredients needing to be cooked. Or I might be inspired by a recipe and make sure it’s on my shopping list that week.

It’s a book to cook from that’s for sure. The recipes, like Jamie promises, are super easy and accessible. the layout of the book is like the previous 5-Ingredients book (which I still use and love!) – all recipes are on the left-hand side of the page with the picture on the right. The images are bright and beautiful – unfussy as well (so the dishes look like they will when you make them, which is always encouraging for home cooks!). The recipes themselves are short, both the list of ingredients and the instructions so they really do look and feel do-able (and, they are!).

Kids tasting as they season Jamie Oliver's Angry Pasta Fagioli from #jamiesveg on eatlivetravelwrite.com(teaching kids to taste as they go when making Angry Pasta Fagioli)

My Petits Chefs have already made two dishes from this book – Angry Pasta Fagioli and Squash Gnocchi, both with great success – do-able, kid-friendly meals that are ready in around an hour? Sounds good, right?

This is a great books for vegetarians and flexitarians. For people looking for new ways to prepare and eat vegetables. For people looking for inspiration on what to cook from their farmer’s market haul or organic produce delivery. I swear, there’s something in here for everyone and even the most committed carnivores won’t miss the meat in these meals. Bright, flavourful food that tastes as good as it looks – what could be better?

  1. Just wondering… I bought Jamie’s previous Veg book a few years ago. I believe this is the same book re issued. I was a Jamie Ambassador and know you were too so I’m guessing you would have both books?

    • Hey Cathy, I don’t have another Jamie vegetarian cookbook but I believe this is a new book, he’s been working on for a while. That said, most of Jamie’s books now contain recipes I recognise from other books 😉 What is the name of the book you have?
