French Fridays: Kids make no-knead baguette

Kids make no-knead baguette on eatlivetravelwrite.comI’m lucky in my day job that I get to incorporate a lot of what I love into the everyday. French language, French culture and, of course, French food are part of my everyday and I am so grateful. My boss is very supportive of my schemes to get kids cooking en français and what used to be an occasional activity is now fully integrated in the curriculum in certain grades.

Last year, you might remember that a few of my recipes even got mass-tested because the Grade 4 class elected to research French food and culture for a project. Each group wrote research questions and answered them and decided they wanted to “present their knowledge” to an audience by making a recipe video. The project was successful last year but I wanted to refine it and make it even better this year and I knew this group was a “foodie” group so imagined it would be very popular too!

Last year’s Grade 4s made profiteroles, crêpes and crème caramel. This year’s group chose baguette, crème brûlée, chocolate mousse and the ever-popular crêpes (affectionately known as “craps” in this group. Last year when they were in Grade 3, one of them misheard me talking about crêpes – I guess if you’re 8, you can hear what you want in the way someone pronounces “crêpes” – and so they will forever be known as “les craps”! What can you do? I’m convinced the boys chose that recipe just so they’d have the chance to say the word over and over again!

Today I thought I’d share the boys’ version of a no-knead baguette. As well as doing a great job on their research questions “le nom de la baguette vient de la forme” (the baguette is named for its shape – “baguette” actually means “small stick” – and chopstick – in French), the boys made a superb baguette over the course of a couple of days. They were amazed at how little work actually needed to be done and kept asking me “But what did you do when you took it away?” (Answer: “I just let it do its rising, I didn’t touch it”) and, of course, they LOVED how it tasted. But I’ll let their hands speak for themselves…

    • I really like the hands-off element of my recipe (also the dough can keep in the fridge for a few days meaning you can prep it on the weekend and bring it out as you need it during the week!)
