Tuesdays with Dorie (Dorie’s Cookies): Hamantaschen

These fruit-filled cookies are named for Haman, the villain of the Book of Esther. To make a long and evil story short, Mordecai, kin to Esther, considered the Queen of the Jews in biblical times, refused to bow down to Haman, the Grand Vizier of Persia who – and this is key – wore a tri-cornered hat. Enraged, Haman plots to kill all the Jews. Esther and Mordecai learn of the plot, foil it, save the Jews and do away with Haman.

Every year, for the holiday of Purim, Jewish children commemorate Esther’s victory by reenacting the story, complete with noisemakers that are wound up every time Haman’s name is mentioned. And then, to celebrate the victory, there are these cookies, made with a soft, sweet dough, filled with jammy dried fruit and nuts and shaped like Haman’s triangular hat.

Maybe this is what is meant by ‘sweet revenge’.

Triangles, huh. As you can see mine didn’t *quite*  work as triangles, although my colleagues didn’t seem to mind. These were a much-needed sweet treat on the last Monday of this term and noone seemed to notice what shape they were! The dough reminded me a lot of Dorie’s rugelach dough which I also found fairly challenging to work with – it’s very very soft (to the point where the first time you put it in the fridge, it’s bordering on cake-batter consistency). I followed the instructions to keep it chilled and even rolled and cut the pastry on a chilled silicone baking sheet but when I was trying to shape them, they kept cracking or folding over. I didn’t get to making the fruit filling so I used my favourite cherry jam, sparingly as I didn’t want the jam overflowing in addition to the pastry not behaving quite as it should.

These are something I’ll definitely try again sometime, making sure to keep the dough even more chilled and perhaps rolling the dough slightly thicker. Interested to see how everyone else in the Tuesdays with Dorie group got on with these!

    The dough was tricky!
    I loved the taste however, lucky coworkers! I love cherry jam.

    Dorie uses the pinching method with these but I have been more successful with folding to create a triangle. My husband is sure enjoying these. The filling is great when you have time to make it.

    Yep, this dough was challenging. Loved the end result but boy, I was glad when I had finished shaping these.

    Your cookies look scrumptious and the dough is the best part of these cookies anyway. I bet they were delicious with the jam.

    you are too hard on yourself…i agree with the “pretty” comments. the top picture is really beautiful actually, and the cherry jam is a great color. i also used store-bought jam.
