Tuesdays with Dorie (Dorie’s Cookies): Chunkers

Dorie Greenspan chocolate chunkers for Tuesdays with Dorie on eatlivetravelwrite.comThis week’s Tuesdays with Dorie recipe from Dorie’s Cookies might just be my new favourite. Ok, ok, I know I say something like this every week that we post from Dorie’s Cookies, but honestly, every cookie has been so good, so clever, so tasty (and yay! there are SO many more to make!).

About the “chunker” (you’ll understand the name once you’ve made them), Dorie says:

These are scoop-and- bake free-forms. They are chubby and chockablock with chopped-up good things that poke out of the cookies at every which angle. Famously disorderly, they are phenomenally delicious. There are chopped salted cashews in the mix; winey, sweet-tart dried cherries; chopped milk chocolate; and both chopped and melted bitter-sweet chocolate. You need a lot of chocolate—more than a pound!—and every penny that you put into buying great chocolate for these will come back to you in oohs, aahs and culinary contentment. There’s no question that Chunkers are one of the world’s great cookies.

One of the world’s great cookies” huh? I figured our annual holiday open house (our third year hosting  in France!) would be a good time to try these out. Dorie’s right that these use a LOT of chocolate (t’is the season, right?) and are very substantial, thanks in part to the add-ins (note that I got many more than the 18 the recipe suggests this quantity makes – I used a medium cookie scoop, not a large one and they were STILL substantial). I used salted cashews as well as dried cranberries (hey, that’s what was available at the local supermarket but I will definitely make them again with cherries) and it was a combo that worked really well but I think the possibilities for adding in dried fruit and nuts are endless.

Dorie Greenspan chunkers on eatlivetravelwrite.comVerdict? These *are* GREAT cookies. So good I had to give a bunch of them away because I would have just eaten them all myself. They came along for a little road trip last weekend though and were the perfect “car snack” to keep you going until lunch. They are also the perfect “with wine” snack in lieu of dessert. One of the world’s great cookies? I think so.
