I’m a huge fan of summer and not just because I get July and most of August off teaching đ I love the fact that there are literally more (daylight) hours in the day and I feel like I get so much more accomplished. Summer gives me the chance to “breathe” a little and actually check out some of the cool events that are taking place, wherever I am (home in Toronto; France, where I am currently or anywhere else in the world!). One of the things I love most about the summer, everywhere, is all of the food festivals that seem to be happening. From the marchĂ©s nocturne of Southwest France to the endless food-related events that take place in Toronto, there’s always something delicious to eat đ
One of my favourite dishes to check out in terms of festival and street food is tacos. Toronto does some pretty great tacos year-round and there’s even a Taco Fest! I confess to putting tacos in the “order out, not make-at-home” category (even though they’re really easy if you have all the ingredients) but recently I figured out a way that gives you the taste of a simple taco with less mess (confession: I always overstuff my tacos…), because, BOWLS! Obviously this is a simplified version but it satisfies a taco craving with just a few pantry and fridge staples (and hey, in my taco-less town in Southwest France, it means I can satisfy that craving for these flavours and textures pretty easily too!)
To kick your tacos up a notch, hot sauce/ salsa is great and if you are serving all the components separately, you can let people make it as hot as they like (or not!). I’ve chosen to use Gay Lea Low Fat Sour Cream to temper any heat from the salsa you might have chosen. Since you don’t need this as an ingredient to make anything creamier, just cooler, the low-fat version works here.
This is the ultimate in “self serve” meals – prep the ingredients in advance (or get the whole family to help!), then let everyone assemble their own! A great anytime dish but especially great in the summer – bowls lend themselves to outdoor eating and hey, there’s less mess when you serve food in a bowl!
All the goodness of a taco served in a bowl! Less a recipe than a guideline, feel free to add in the ingredients you have on hand!Easy chicken taco bowls

What about you – what’s your kitchen hack to make a favourite dish easier to serve?
Disclosure: I am part of the PTPA Brand Ambassador Program with Gay Lea, and receive compensation as part of my affiliation with this group. As always, opinions expressed here are my own and I only write about/ recommend products I use and love. If you know me in real life or follow me on social media, youâll know that writing a French food cookbook requires ridiculous amounts of butter so this campaign is a perfect fit đ
This is one I am pinning for later for sure! Great idea. Also I LOVE your dish. It is pretty perfect for this meal. Chicken taco bowls will be made here later this summer because hello easy and yummy and kids love this stuff. My kitchen hack actually used to be browning the ground beef the moment I bought it from a grocery store Sunday and came home, then saving it in the fridge for the next day. Made Back to school kind of Mondays so much easier and faster when the kids were small. I should do that again actually.
That is GREAT kitchen hack which would definitely make weeknights easier!
I absolutely LOVE tacos so this taco bowl is definitely up my alley! I could eat this every day, I’m pretty sure of it. This looks super god đ
Yup, I think I could eat this for lunch everyday too!
I love taco everything and this recipe is making me hungry!
Thanks – I just love the textures in here!
