Most of you know I’m in France for a large part of the summer (follow me on Instagram for pictures from Southwest France and 10 days of the Camino in late July!)
I’m staying in our vacation rental property in the lovely town of Nérac – the town I fell in love with when I first visited its gorgeous market back in 2012.
Apart from falling in love with the town of Nérac that day, I was thrilled to discover yet another gorgeous French market. If you’re staying in a vacation rental property during your holidays in France and you love cooking, like me, you might even plan your travels around market days! Although supermarkets do hold a great deal of fascination for me when I travel, nothing beats a great farmers’ market. If you’re interested in blending in when you shop at the markets, I’ve written some tips for “How to Shop like the French” over on The French Barn blog that you might like.
Yup, I’m a sucker for markets and having a kitchen means I am not only able to admire the gorgeous produce but I get to cook with it as well. This week, as well as hitting up the Saturday morning Nérac market (one of the biggest in the region), I also took advantage of new neighbour and friend, Maurine, who offered me a lift to the market on Wednesday morning in Lavardac, the next closest town to us in Nérac. Lavardac is a smaller market but no less charming and I thought instead of showing you in pictures, you might like to see and hear the market for yourselves. So I shot a few little videos that will hopefully give you a taste of what it’s like to do your shopping at a French market.
Enjoy and happy (French) Friday!
How wonderful to spend a large part of your summer in France! I enjoyed reading and watching about the market. I even popped over to “How to Shop Like the French!” Great tips!
Thanks for stopping by and reading 🙂
I’m hungry just watching that video. Such delicious looking produce etc!! I often go to the St. Jacobs market near me but there is too much of a flea market vibe for me to really enjoy it. I have market envy. 😉
Thanks so much – this will keep me going in the months when I can’t be in France!
What a wonderful adventure, and what a foodie heaven! Love the video, mesmerizing.
Thanks so much – yes, I am pretty much in a perpetual state of being mezmerized by the markets!
Nice little video Mardi – gives a small taste of the market.
Thanks so much – more video coming this summer!
Oh Mardi, I only dream of the day when I get to rent your beautiful house and discover Nérac! You know you’re in France when you’ve got not one, but several amazing markets close to home, right? Your video makes me feel like I’m there. P.S. What is the veggie with the huge purple flower on top? It looks like an artichoke…?? I’ve never seen that!
That is indeed an artichoke flower 🙂 And thank you for your sweet words 🙂
Soooooo I wonder if that is an Akubra on the charcuteur au consommateur man????
Mardi – you should have zoomed in on the little guy wearing fluffy grey shoes and red and white stockings for me 😀
Great video – loved it. Which reminds me….23 more sleeps and I get to visit markets, REAL shops, delicatessens and the list goes on (not that I’m counting of course!!!)
Where are you off to Tami? And no it’s not an Akubra, it’s a Texan “ranchwear” hat!
Nowhere exotic – just the Sunshine Coast for an extra long weekend
