Les Petits Chefs make Jamie Oliver’s super green soup and easy flatbreads

Well hello winter! It’s been a strange(ly) warm winter so far but this week we’ve had snow and wind and freezing rain – perfect soup weather. I actually asked one of the boys last week what they thought we should make in cooking club this week and his answer (on a day when it was bitterly cold) was “Soup!”  Then last weekend it was positively spring-like as I was shopping for ingredients and I wondered how a warm soup would go down but I needn’t have worried – the next day the temperatures were on the way down again. In any case, Jamie’s Super Green Soup is warm and comforting without being a heavy soup so it was a good choice for unpredictable temperatures.

It was also a great recipe to keep lots of little hands busy throughout the session (always a challenge to find recipes where everyone will have something to do *most* of the time…

For a start, there were lots of potatoes to chop…

The soup bubbled away… (note that the original recipe calls for some chorizo but we have a few vegetarian boys this terms so I left it out. I’d actually imagine this would be really good with bacon…)

It’s one of my favourite “quick bread” recipes to make with the boys since it doesn’t require many ingredients or much time. A little bit of baking powder, flour and yoghurt, some muscle (not too much!)…

The complete meal:

Now, I know they’re hungry by the time the end of the club rolls around but it’s always satisfying to see them excited about what we make. Soup is always a great choice since it keeps them busy and it’s a good way to get some vegetables in 😉

  1. They did a great job making soup and I think it’s wonderful that it was their idea too. The flatbreads looks really good and I’d never thought to use them for soup dunking. Love the idea.
