Les Petits Chefs decorate cookies for St Valentine’s day with Adell Shneer

Cookies decorated by Adell Shneer on eatlivetravelwrite.comIt’s an exciting week at school this week – Spirit Week (lots of fun games and activities for the boys as well as “themed” dress each day) and a four day weekend is coming up. If you know anything about kids or have had experience in a classroom, you’ll know that these types of events can be a little challenging in terms of keeping them focussed and on-task (heck, it’s hard for me to focus with a four day weekend in sight too!) so I definitely need to choose my classroom and extra-curricular activities wisely 😉

Which is why I decided to put a hold on our Jamie Oliver Everyday Super Food recipes in cooking club this week and put in a request to my friend and cookie decorator extraordinaire, Adell Shneer (who has worked with the boys on a number of occasions before) to see if she might come and show the boys a few tricks about decorating cookies. With St Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it seemed to be great timing too!

Kids (with “crazy” hats, hair, ties, belts and socks!), cookies and icing? It could have been a recipe for chaos but it was the complete opposite. I always find that in cooking, the more intricate the task, the more focussed the boys are. Monday’s session was a prime example. Some of the younger boys wondered what on earth we were going to do for an hour. “Just decorating cookies?” they asked me. Having seen Adell work with the boys before, I knew an hour wouldn’t be long enough for some of them. And I was right! It’s a serious, and time-consuming business, cookie decorating!

We started out with a lesson about the colour wheel and the boys got to mix up a colour of their choice…

And the focus. It was so quiet in there you could hear a pin drop.

Honestly, at the end of the hour we were rushing them out the door – I think they would have stayed for another hour and decorated cookies until there were no more to decorate!

  1. Bravo to Adele for coming to visit Les Petits Chefs again. What a great job they did on all their cookies! I can imagine how much fun they all had. I’m glad to hear that they were so focused on their designs. There really is something very calming about decorating cookies, not to mention the sense of accomplishment when you finish your little edible projects.
