250 cookies (244 to be exact!). The boys were so proud of their efforts this week. It’s the last week of school and normally clubs are over but I gathered boys from my Petits Chefs and Cooking Basics club to help our Grade 8s out with a project they have taken on as part of their curriculum – feeding 100+ people this Friday evening at one of the Out of the Cold programs. Out of the Cold operates a meal program for the homeless and marginally housed and our Grade 8s have planned, shopped for and will cook the meal tomorrow evening.
As they were looking for food donations, I wondered about contributing some festive dessert and asked the boys in both my clubs if they would be able to help me out. “Baking cookies? 250 of them?” The boys were so “in”.
With 12 boys baking 6 batches of cookies in under an hour, I knew it would be a little bit of organized chaos. We had a few issues (we learned never to let water or oil touch chocolate when it’s in a bowl melting over a bain marie otherwise it will seize!) and we were all interested to see that different brands of chocolate chips will produce cookies that are different colours, but in the end we got there with 6 giant trays of amazing smelling cookies.
Some of the boys spent their lunch hour the following day glazing and decorating them so they looked very festive indeed.
The recipe we used was for Chocolate Mint Crinkle Cookies from the Canola Eat Well website. And hey, we can assure you that the 1.5 hours chilling time in the fridge wasn’t necessary 😉 (we didn’t have time)
We hope the guests at Out of the Cold will enjoy our efforts tomorrow evening. We certainly enjoyed baking them.

* Out of the Cold is just one of the many charities you can support this holiday season. Please consider donating time, food or money to those less fortunate than yourself. What might not seem like a big deal to you (or even a fun activity – the boys certainly enjoyed “giving back” in this way!), can make a huge difference to someone else.
Happy Holidays!
Well done, LPC and CB crew! Kudos to you for donating your time to help the grade 8s with this most worthy cause.
All the boys this week have worked so hard for this dinner. A true community effort.
LPCs to the rescue. Well done boys
They did a great job 🙂
