French Fridays with Dorie: Socca from vieux Nice

It’s Friday! And I’m in France. Finally. If you follow me on Twitter, Flickr or Instagram, you’ll have seen the drama I had trying to get here. Two 12+ hour delays, much sitting around in the airport and at the end of a very long 36 hours, one missing bag. No, I am not a happy camper but since I AM in France, I can’t complain too much, right? Especially when I met up with Jill Colonna from Mad about Macarons for afternoon tea at Carette less than an hour after setting foot in my apartment 🙂 Check out what we had here.

I had planned to write this week’s French Fridays with Dorie entry on the plane. But by the time I finally got on the plane I was so tired that I ended up watching “Les Saveurs du Palais” instead. So it’ll be short and sweet. This week’s recipe was socca on page 51 is basically a thin pancake made with chick peas that is cooked in the oven. Super easy to make.

Dorie says to eat this warm from the oven as an apéritif snack with black pepper. Trix made a socca pancake pizza recently that looked wonderful. Me? I served this with Christine Ferber jams.

Warm from the oven, this was really tasty. But beware – it needs to be eaten warm. Even 30 minutes out of the oven it wasn’t as good.

Would I make this again? Maybe. Next time I would try to make it much thinner so it was crispy and crunchy, rather than pancake-y. But this was was a pretty nice mid-morning snack, I have to say.

Next week, I will be a little bit more verbose in my FFWD post. For now, I need to shake this jetlag and get to bed. And hope that my suitcase is on its way (let’s all cross our fingers, shall we?) because my travelling kitchen scale and measuring cups/ spoons are in there.

French Fridays with Dorie participants do not publish the recipes on our blogs (though this week, you can find the recipe online here), we prefer if you purchase Around My French Table for yourselves which you can do here on Amazon or Amazon Canada. Or for free worldwide shipping, buy from The Book Depository. Go on, treat yourself then join us here!

  1. Glad to see you are finally settled in – even though you lost a day. Bad Air Canada…. Hope your missing bag shows up soon. I can’t tell you how many times the airline has had to deliver my bags to me a day or two after I arrive – highly annoying.

  5. Your socca looks good. I ate mine fresh out of the oven, so I am not sure about what it would be like cold. Hope you are enjoying your travels.
