Hmmm… this week’s Tuesdays with Dorie Baking with Julia cookies (Mocha Chocolate Chip Cookies, p 330) are lucky that I didn’t make them just yesterday and blog about them today. Because these cookies get better a few days later. It’s also lucky Mr Neil was not around over the weekend I did bake them because we would not have had the chance to realise that!
These cookies are pretty simple to bake up – they do require a rest in the fridge for a few hours though. I left mine overnight and found the dough very “Play Doh” like and hard to separate into tablespoon-size portions. Hence my recipe (halved so it should have made 24) only made 15 of these suckers – the biggest cookies you’ll ever see. Only 9 of them fit on a tray once they were baked!
I was a little disappointed that more of the mocha didn’t come through – it was quite strong in the dough but not in the finished cookie. That said, I used a shot of espresso in the mix instead of the coffee powder the recipe called for. I really do need to keep some coffee extract or something on hand for baking….
I was initially unimpressed by these cookies. They seemed flat and “blah”. Not at all like these chocolate chip cookies which we are not allowed to have in the house anymore for fear of eating them all in a day! To their credit, these cookies, whilst not mocha-tasting at all, were delectably chewy which is how we like chocolate chip cookies in our house. I was worried they would dry up and harden over time though. But the next day, they were still chewy. And the day after that and the day after that. And they still tasted great. So not the ultimate chocolate chip cookie but a pretty good one. And no, I did not use apricots in the recipe as per the “option”. Had I done that I might have opted for white chocolate chips instead. Now maybe there’s something I need to try….

Oh no – sorry that these were not for you. I liked them, although in my case the coffee flavour was a little too strong (I used instant coffee granules). They were a hit at work.
Oh I would have liked strong coffee flavour!
These were a big hit with everyone, including myself. Too bad they weren´t what you hoped for Mardi. They look perfect to me!
Ah it’s ok… Can’t win em all.
So glad you could make the “time-test” and loved them in the end.
I used 2 1/2 Tbsp Nescafé Gold instant coffee and could detect it well in the baked cookies.
The addition of nuts made them so yummy…(in fact I’ve doubled the ingredients (with some changes), split the dough into 4 portions and added different ingredients (such as orange, pecan+walnuts, dried cherries, almonds): a winner in our house
I loved them…very much!
Ah that sounds like a plan re: the coffee powder…
It’s funny that the cookies went “reverse” on you – usually, they are at their best the first day or two, not the other way around 🙂

Well I didn’t NOT enjoy them, they were ok.
I’m impressed you got nine on a tray. I only have smaller pans, so I had to bake no more than 5-6 at a time.

So sorry these didn’t turn out so well for you. I omitted the apricots, too, and am so glad I did! These are a new favorite around our house. 🙂

Well your cookies look great. Sorry you didn`t enjoy. I went with dried cherries rather than the apricot and they were good.

At least you have Mr. Neil to help you eat these…I’ve taken to giving them away so I don’t eat them all. I’d probably like these just as much without the mocha, but that hasn’t stopped me from eating them!
1/2 or even 1/4 batches…. That’s how I save myself from eating them all.
This is special that you have to wait to eat them 🙂 Usually CCC should be eaten right off the oven. Maybe leave the dough in the fridge 2-3 days before baking them and see if they will improve.
Well since I have other recipes I already love, I don’t think I would try these again.
I totally agree that these get better and better. Well, I can only attest to later that night….:) Luckily, I only made a half batch! Your cookies look great!
I agree – these are not my favourite cookies ever, but they are good. And the people at work went nuts for them!

Funny how the coffee flavor was so much more pronounced in the dough than the baked cookie.
We enjoyed these – and a few days later as well!
