Yes it’s back – World Nutella Day! Once again, Sara from Ms. Adventures in Italy and Michelle from Bleeding Espresso are hosting “World Nutella Day 2013″ (the SEVENTH instalment!) – a day to celebrate, get creative with, and most importantly, eat Nutella.
This is my third year participating in World Nutella Day – in 2010, I made a Nutella cheesecake, in 2011, I made Nutella lamingtons and in 2012, I went French with Nutella macarons craquelés.

This year, I thought about making my own Nutella but it’s been done before. Instead, I settled on Nutella truffle pops – basically a riff on cake pops. I made a flourless chocolate cake with hazelnut meal so the base was quality to start with. Into the cake crumbs, I mixed some Nutella (not too much – the cake was actually incredibly moist and I didn’t want them to be gooey), then I coated the truffles in a smooth chocolate ganache. Yeah, a lot of steps but using the from-scratch cake that was so tasty on its own really made the difference. And because the cake itself was not that sweet, the chocolate ganache was not overpowering.
Most of the truffle pops I sprinkled with nonpareils but a few of them made it to Neil’s curling club bake-off dipped in a little hazelnut meal.

MY BOOK! In the French kitchen with kids is out now! Click here for details and how to order!
Mardi, these sound really good and you made your own hazelnut chocolate cake, which I love!
From scratch is always best!
Oh man, how did I miss this!
These look absolutely lovely 🙂
Mark your calendar Cher!
The hazelnut cake base you made for these sounds wonderful. What a lovely job you did on dipping these! Lucky those who attended Neal’s curlling bake-off!!
Thanks so much – but they didn’t win the bakeoff (I didn’t make enough so they didn’t get that many votes…)
Love these pops – I thought for sure you were going to make macaroons for today! Yeah for the pop!
I’m working on macarons with hazelnuts instead of almonds but they are very much a work in progress. Next year maybe….
I’ve got to mark world nutella day on my calendar, I don’t want to miss it again next year! 🙂 These truffles sound wonderful and a great way to celebrate an important day!
It’s a fun day every year, playing with Nutella!
These look like the perfect thing to make with a few nieces and nephews. Thanks!
So easy and fun!
