When I saw this week’s French Fridays with Dorie recipe (Cheez-it-ish crackers, p 10), I actually had to Google what a “Cheez-it” was. Ok, then, it’s like a version of a Goldfish cracker. Though Dorie’s book shows a picture where they look a little more shortbread-y than cracker-y….
I baked these on a day when I needed some quiet time in the kitchen. They took no time to whip up. The dough came together quickly and sat in the fridge for an hour or so. I *only* have a star shaped cookie cutter (I know, what’s wrong with me?) but felt these were pretty and festive in star-shapes.
I used an Emmenthal cheese in this but feel they could have benefited from something a little sharper – like a Cheddar. Next time, I’ll do that. These are also much smaller than Dorie’s suggested size – so, think bite sized like Goldfish.
Have to say I was super impressed with this recipe – it’s one of those things that you can serve at a gathering and then casually mention that you made them. It’s a fact that’s bound to impress your guests! And hey, noone has to know just how easy it really is!
Pretty. Tasty. You can’t really go wrong.
French Fridays with Dorie participants do not publish the recipes on our blogs (though this week you can find the recipe online here) rather, we prefer if you purchase Around My French Table for yourselves (trust me, you definitely want this book!) which you can do here on Amazon or Amazon Canada. Or for free worldwide shipping, buy from The Book Depository. Go on, treat yourself then join us here!
Oh, Mardi, your little cheez-it–ish Stars are much prettier than any little Goldfish that Pepperidge Farm ever sent down the conveyor belt. I thought “cheez-it-ish” was a word Dorie made up. Didn’t even think about it actually being real. I agree with you – making these little nibbles and then just casually mentioning this to your guests, would be great fun. Sorta like the olives. Who has time to make this stuff? Answer, we do. You went tiny crackers. I went bigger crackers. I honestly love your little stars, perfect for any occasion. Happy Holidays.

Yes these are the perfect cracker for a lot of occasions!
Yours puffed up beautifully, Mardi. And the stars are perfect for the holidays! Merry, merry Christmas, my friend!
Cheers Liz 🙂
I like your cute little stars. I thought this was a good recipe too, although definitely more shortbread than cracker.
Huh. Mine were more cracker than shortbread.
They are the cutest size Mardi. I copied your star shape idea! Weren´t this wonderful? Have a great Christmas!
Indeed!
I am very fond of Cheese-its. Okay, more than a little fond. I’m addicted to them and they are my snack downfall. I have wanted to make these since I saw them in Dorie’s book, but have never gotten around to it. Yours are so pretty and I just want to jump in the screen and have a taste with that glass of red wine.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Sam
These are going to be made again, for sure!
Awww – baby stars 🙂 And how do you keep your silpat so shiny and new looking?????
Merry Christmas and safe travels.
Well, it’s only 6 months old!
Those stars are too cute! Very festive.
Thanks Eileen!
You may only have one cookie cutter but it was the perfect one for this recipe. These little star shaped appetizer crackers are adorable.
Yes it worked out well!
They look just lovely ! Merry Christmas !
Why thank you!
Dangerous! I just know I would hoover these up. Just as well you’re in Canada!
Happy Christmas xx
Yes – easy to eat handsful of these!
Wow! Your little stars are way too cute! They DO look puffy but Goldfish crackers are puffy so I think you were totally channeling that. They look so adorable next to that little cocktail. Also, your silpat is amazingly clean and nice looking. Mine is five years old and looking it so I think I need a new one stat. My old crusty one is too embarrassed to be featured on my blog again I think.
My Silpats are relatively new but I am sure in a few months…
Awesome little cheese stars! Those would be so cool to have at a holiday party. Mine came out a little puffy too, and not at all like shortbread. Still tasty though! Mine were one-bite also, so maybe that was it? Either way, yours look terrific! Merry Christmas to you, Mardi!
Perfect for a party, yes!
I love your puffy stars! They’re very festive.
Wishing you a wonderful Christmas!
Thanks Susan!
Love your baby stars..such a fun take on a wonderful recipe;-)
Have a very happy holiday season;-)
Cheers!
Ooh … I love your tiny, puffy stars. Some of mine puffed, but “fell” when they were cooling and overall they were flaky, and crunchy. I loved them.
Mine fell after a few days but not too much.
These are so adorable. Maddie loves cheez-its and I know she’d love these. Happy Holidays, my friend!
You should make them with her – so easy and fun!
Your stars look so perfect and flakey. We loved these little crackers. Have a great
Christmas holiday.
Yes they were nice and flakey!
Those cheesy li’l stars wouldn’t last 1/2 an hour in my house. YUM
They are More-ish!
I love how your crackers are so puffy. And the tiny stars are so perfect for the holiday! Lovely treats.
Yes, not sure they were meant to be puffy but they look pretty!
Mardi – a small star in the culinary firmament
Oh you are too kind!
Those stars are just perfect, Mardi! They really do look professional. I’d never heard of a Cheez-it, either, but I’m glad to have been introduced to this recipe. I hope your holiday is lovely.
Me too – I’ll definitely make them again!
I agree that you can’t go wrong with these. Your stars have the goldfish color! They would be great with tomato soup. Have a Merry Christmas!
Oh YES – on tomato soup would be great!
They look beautiful and cheesy! Perfect combo. 🙂
Thanks so much!
Love the stars and love the gorgeous color you got ! I was so happy to find out how easy this recipe was- the fact that they tasted so awesome was a delight 🙂 I did have to chuckle that you were not familiar with “Cheez Its”. I wish I could say the same but I have done some serious diet damage over the years with those red boxes……happiest of holidays to you and yours !!!
Oh I am SO glad I am not familiar with Cheez-its. Except now I apparently am!
Mardi, you were right “great minds…” – of course, I love the star shape of your Cheese Crackers quite a bit – and they do have such a lovely warm, “cheesy” color! I am running a little behind with my comments but I would also like to take the opportunity to whish you a very Merry Christmas and all the best for the upcoming year! And I would like to wish you safe travels!
I couldn’t NOT make stars for the holidays!
so pretty for a cocktail party!
Aren’t they just?
