Even though some of our tomatoes are obviously late bloomers, there’s a most definite chill in the air these days. Trying to prolong those lazy summer days and warm nights, Neil produced the most wonderful plate of local tomatoes (from a friend’s garden), buffalo mozzarella (ahem, not local) with fresh basil from our garden and balsamic and olive oil. Whilst it didn’t bring summer back outside, for a brief moment in our living room, we closed our eyes and pretended…
I love simple dishes like these 🙂 Bring on SUMMER!
very nice
I always love that caprese salad. Very refreshing and versatile.
oh summer or not I will always have a caprese salad simply because it is delicious
I truly wish that our tomatoes were edible this year. They did terribly! Your salad looks delicious. Thanks for your comments on http://menumaniac.blogspot.com and have a blast at the Jamie Oliver launch. Very cool. Hope you plan to blog about it!
As you can tell from my site this combo is a fav.
Looks fantastic!
Yum… Looks delicious! I love caprese salads!
This is really pretty and easy to make.
If tomatoes were perennial, I'd have one of these for lunch every day and not get tired of it.
Penny – so jealous that you're cming up to summer…
Pegasus – thanks!
Divina – me too!
Jessie – I agree – it's a year round dish…
Menu Maniac – you're welcome! These tomatoes were not ours, we only had a couple of them that were big and red and ripe…
Jen – me too!
Miranda – thanks!
Anncoo – that's the beauty of it!
Chickenless – I wish tomatoes were perennial too!
Already there are no more peaches at the market and lots of grapes and apples…
Just wanted to say that your blog has looked unbelievably gorgeous lately (not that it looked less than delicious before) and the photos make me want to caress the tomatoes before eating them. And the posts are so effortless to read and really capture your love of food and make me wish we were hanging out and sharing appetizers. Just saying, and thanks.
Mary-Laure – I know – it's so sad…
Kablooey – thanks so much!!! I am flattered. I have been working really hard on my blog so I am glad it's showing…
mmm…looks so good! Fresh tomatoes and fresh basil are one of my favourite combinations! We had a basil infused olive oil that we brought back from Napa because I love the taste so much!
Perhaps the biggest oxymoron in the English language is the term "exciting salad" – sorry foodies.
However, I might redeem myself in your collective eyes if I say that a caprese salad is at the apex of salads. The combination of ripe, slighly acidic tomato (with a hint of salt); the slightly drier texture of mozarella, all set off with the subtleness of the basil and the sharpness of the balsamic vinegar – oh heaven! Well done, Mr Neil…
High/Low – Mmmm – basin infused olive oil sounds great!
Geoff (dad) – Are you the next AA Gill or what??? 😉
Not sure I can take much credit other than a bit of slicing and sprinkling, Geoff! 🙂
And can I say how wonderful the bufalo mozzarella imported from Italy (at a whopping $13) is compared to the domestic variety…
No but it was YOUR idea, Neil!
This is my favorite salad. It just SCREAMS summer! Great photo!
Kate – yes it does!
looks simple, neat, healthy, lovely and delicious!
Thanks Mary!
There is no better way to prolong summer than with a Caprese salad… 🙂 It's my favorite salad ever! Beautiful dish! 🙂
Andrea – thanks!
