Last throes of summer…

Even though some of our tomatoes are obviously late bloomers, there’s a most definite chill in the air these days. Trying to prolong those lazy summer days and warm nights, Neil produced the most wonderful plate of local tomatoes (from a friend’s garden), buffalo mozzarella (ahem, not local) with fresh basil from our garden and balsamic and olive oil. Whilst it didn’t bring summer back outside, for a brief moment in our living room, we closed our eyes and pretended…

  2. Just wanted to say that your blog has looked unbelievably gorgeous lately (not that it looked less than delicious before) and the photos make me want to caress the tomatoes before eating them. And the posts are so effortless to read and really capture your love of food and make me wish we were hanging out and sharing appetizers. Just saying, and thanks.

  4. mmm…looks so good! Fresh tomatoes and fresh basil are one of my favourite combinations! We had a basil infused olive oil that we brought back from Napa because I love the taste so much!

  5. Perhaps the biggest oxymoron in the English language is the term "exciting salad" – sorry foodies.
However, I might redeem myself in your collective eyes if I say that a caprese salad is at the apex of salads. The combination of ripe, slighly acidic tomato (with a hint of salt); the slightly drier texture of mozarella, all set off with the subtleness of the basil and the sharpness of the balsamic vinegar – oh heaven! Well done, Mr Neil…

  7. Not sure I can take much credit other than a bit of slicing and sprinkling, Geoff! 🙂

And can I say how wonderful the bufalo mozzarella imported from Italy (at a whopping $13) is compared to the domestic variety…
