We’re back! That’s right, Les Petits Chefs is back in session for the term and I couldn’t be happier! The beginning of the school year is always a little bit chaotic (for teachers, too!) so I like to cook something simple with the boys on the first week of club to see where we are at in terms of who knows what and who works well together. In planning the rest of the term (our field trips and guest chefs) these things are important to know!
I’ve been cooking a lot myself from Jamie Oliver’s latest book Everyday Super Food and loving every recipe so I thought I might introduce the term via one of Jamie’s recipes I knew would be a hit – pancakes! But not your standard breakfast pancakes – these are made with cottage cheese for a hit of protein, corn and spring onion (which give them beautiful colour). They are served with caramelized bananas and bacon, so, um, who wouldn’t like these?
The recipe itself is fairly simple – just as well because with some scheduling changes and the usual “first day of club” later start time so we are sure we have all the right boys in the right place, we ended up with much less than 60 minutes – more like 40 which is challenging to produce a meal in when you are an adult, let alone in a lab with 14 boys…
The boys gathered their ingredients and started assembling the batter, then I was thrilled to see some of them just getting on with it and cooking…
Meanwhile, I had the boys cook the bacon and bananas separately as I took a look at the clock and realised we would never finish on time if we cooked them as per Jamie’s instructions all together in the frying pans…
I can always judge a cooking club session based on 1. How many photos I took (less = a little bit more frenetic) and 2. how much of the dish is left for me to photograph at the end (less = it was delicious!). So this week I barely got any photos and this was all that was left once the boys left the lab:
Nope, no bananas or bacon to be seen. And I am pretty sure that not many of these made it home (some of them didn’t make it out of the building!). So, all round, perhaps less organised than usual but a hit nonetheless! It’s going to be such a fun term!

And here was Mr. Neil, eagerly awaiting his lunch portion from the new term of LPC. NO SUCH LUCK! 😉
Don’t forget to add me to your portioning, boys…. 🙂
Well I portion things out and sometimes I don’t get it right especially with a new-to-me recipe!
I am so very intrigued with Jamie’s new book! Are there plenty of vegetarian recipes?
So sorry Mr Neil didn’t get hai treat!
There are a LOT of vegetarian recipes in the book!
Welcome back boys… nice to have these posts coming again.
