Hello all. I thought I had such a great “plan” for this week, mostly because I imagined I would spend many of my 7 hours’ flying to France ticking items off my massive “to do” list. Sadly, this did not happen and I feel like I’ve spent the week since I got here in a perpetual state of confusion (“What day is it?” “What time is it?” “Where do I have to be today?” “How long until I can reasonably retire to bed?”) leading up to me sitting here in the South West of France furiously typing this post up at 11pm on Thursday night (French time so actually it’s still 5pm in Toronto). MOST unlike me. But I can’t really complain, can I? 😉
I made this week’s French Fridays with Dorie recipe (guacamole with tomatoes and bell peppers, p 23) last Sunday for a “going away” party, of sorts. I love getting together with close friends for outdoor parties in the early days of summer and honestly, while I love being in France for the summer, I also miss my back patio and all the great food and wine consumed there during the summer! This dish was a hit with everyone – actually reminiscent of when I first used to make guacamole and make it “chunky” style simply because I didn’t really have the knife skills to finely dice everything. Dorie actually calls for some of the ingredients to be crushed with a mortar and pestle if you want this smoother but mine was already in use making a spice rub for our burgers so I went old school with a chef’s knife and chopped everything fairly finely and evenly to make a nice textured guacamole. I love this version and will be making it again, soon. T’is the season, right?
You can find the recipe for Dorie’s guacamole with tomatoes and bell peppers here.
French Fridays with Dorie participants do not publish the recipes on our blogs, we prefer if you purchase Around My French Table for yourselves which you can do here on Amazon or Amazon Canada. Or for free worldwide shipping, buy from The Book Depository. Go on, treat yourself then join us here!

Many of you will know I’m in France for most of the summer. While I will be eventually blogging about things I do here, the best way to keep up with me will be by following my photos which you can do on my Summer 2014 set on Flickr or Instagram where I am @eatlivtravwrite (if you don’t have the app on your phone you can still check out the photos online.
Looks perfect, Mardi! And we’re not buying your pity party 😉
Nope, can’t feel too bad for you while sitting in France 🙂 (Although, jet lag is tough).
Your chunky guac looks perfectly suited to those chips!
Looks great! I make a salad using almost the same ingredients (plus garlic) and not mashing the avocados. The traditional version back home (in Puerto Rico) has cod as well.
This was a great guacamole recipe. Enjoy your time in France!
I hear you about wanting to be home too. Your guac is gorgeous and once you settle in to French time etc… your summer will be gorgeous too.
Actually, from the photos and the descriptor, I could taste it.
Nice.
Bonjour, Mardi. Je suis d’accord avec Liz. Nous ne pleurons pour vous. Le vin en France est très délicieux également. Votre guacamole regarde le fantastique. Ayez un été merveilleux. Pardonnez mes erreurs, s’il vous plaît.
Looks fantastic! Make the most of your time in France & take lots of photos!
I could easily spend my days wondering what time it is, where I’m supposed to be… at home! Sounds like your stay has been lovely so far! Your guacamole looks great, and I’m sure it was a hit with your guests. I thought it was a nice version, though I’m in the camp of every guacamole is good!
Enjoy your time in France!
Perfect dish for outdoor dining for sure. Enjoy your time in France and hopefully the jet lag settles down soon. A little Mediterranean sun should help;-)
Enjoy your time in France. I hope your body gets on the correct time zone soon.
It was deelish: one of the better guacs. And we like a chunkier version, we do. Just seems more authentic, less processed.
I’m feeling in the same daze and confusion upon return from the West Coast. I would prefer to be adjusting to being in SW France… This perfect for a backyard gathering. Glad you and your friends enjoyed it. The smooth version is nice too.
OMGuacamole!! thats a lovely bowl if it!! Hope you had a great time in France after all!!
OMGuacamole!! thats a lovely bowl of it!! Hope you had a great time in France after all!!
Such a lovely guacamole. I’ve never put peppers into mine – will have to try that.
Really enjoying your pics of France. Thanks for sharing!
oooh Mardi – love your dishware collection! Guac looks great in that dish! I’m reaching through the computer for a scoop!
At least you’re not typing things up at 11 p.m. Vancouver time, which is my M.O.
Your knife skills were definitely up to the task – you got a lovely, even texture for the guacamole. And I’ve been loving your Instagram updates – so many beautiful old buildings!
lol. Yeah. What Liz said. Poor you. Uh huh. But seriously, I just don’t know a bad way to make guacamole and its as easy as can be which is why i’m choosing it to get back my Dorista mojo.
