French Fridays with Dorie: Guacamole with Tomatoes and Bell Peppers

Chunky guacamole from Around my French Table on eatlivetravelwrite.comHello all. I thought I had such a great “plan” for this week, mostly because I imagined I would spend many of my 7 hours’ flying to France ticking items off my massive “to do” list. Sadly, this did not happen and I feel like I’ve spent the week since I got here in a perpetual state of confusion (“What day is it?” “What time is it?” “Where do I have to be today?” “How long until I can reasonably retire to bed?”) leading up to me sitting here in the South West of France furiously typing this post up at 11pm on Thursday night (French time so actually it’s still 5pm in Toronto). MOST unlike me. But I can’t really complain, can I? 😉

I made this week’s French Fridays with Dorie recipe (guacamole with tomatoes and bell peppers, p 23) last Sunday for a “going away” party, of sorts. I love getting together with close friends for outdoor parties in the early days of summer and honestly, while I love being in France for the summer, I also miss my back patio and all the great food and wine consumed there during the summer! This dish was a hit with everyone – actually reminiscent of when I first used to make guacamole and make it “chunky” style simply because I didn’t really have the knife skills to finely dice everything. Dorie actually calls for some of the ingredients to be crushed with a mortar and pestle if you want this smoother but mine was already in use making a spice rub for our burgers so I went old school with a chef’s knife and chopped everything fairly finely and evenly to make a nice textured guacamole. I love this version and will be making it again, soon. T’is the season, right?

You can find the recipe for Dorie’s guacamole with tomatoes and bell peppers here.

  1. Nope, can’t feel too bad for you while sitting in France 🙂 (Although, jet lag is tough).
Your chunky guac looks perfectly suited to those chips!

  2. Looks great! I make a salad using almost the same ingredients (plus garlic) and not mashing the avocados. The traditional version back home (in Puerto Rico) has cod as well.

  4. I could easily spend my days wondering what time it is, where I’m supposed to be… at home! Sounds like your stay has been lovely so far! Your guacamole looks great, and I’m sure it was a hit with your guests. I thought it was a nice version, though I’m in the camp of every guacamole is good!

    Enjoy your time in France!

  6. It was deelish: one of the better guacs. And we like a chunkier version, we do. Just seems more authentic, less processed.

  7. I’m feeling in the same daze and confusion upon return from the West Coast. I would prefer to be adjusting to being in SW France… This perfect for a backyard gathering. Glad you and your friends enjoyed it. The smooth version is nice too.

  8. At least you’re not typing things up at 11 p.m. Vancouver time, which is my M.O.

Your knife skills were definitely up to the task – you got a lovely, even texture for the guacamole. And I’ve been loving your Instagram updates – so many beautiful old buildings!
