I posted a version of this chili a couple of years ago. But when Jenn and Barb put out the call to unite the food blogging community in the wake of Hurricane Sandy by asking folks to share a comfort dish – something you would make for someone in need – I couldn’t think of a better dish to post. I updated this recipe a little from the original, based on the way I made it this time and am posting it today for you to enjoy, for you to maybe make and take to someone who needs a big bowl of comfort for whatever reason.
A big bowl of comfort - chili con carne.Chili con carne

I know I’ve felt pretty helpless watching the hurricane’s destruction from the comfort of my home where I am enjoying warmth and power. But we can help. If you feel so inclined, please donate to help those in need. There are several organizations helping the victims of hurricane Sandy. Some of the larger ones include:
- The Red Cross – providing food, shelter, and other forms of support to hurricane victims. You can donate directly to the Red Cross, you can also text the word “Redcross” to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
- The Salvation Army is also focused on providing food, shelter, and support to victims, and takes donations to storm relief.
- Feeding America is providing food, water and supplies to those who need it as part of their disaster relief program.
On Twitter, follow the #FBS4Sandy hashtag to see everyone’s posts and if you post yourself, don’t forget to link up over on Jenn or Barb s blog posts.
Mardi, thanks so much for participating. I know I would love to have a taste of your chili. It looks like the perfect dish to offer up for a bowl of comfort. The devastation has been unreal, and I know all of us working together to get the word out can make a real difference to help those in need.
Thank YOU for coordinating.
Good Day Mardi. What a great way to bring people together. I will post a Big Batch Chicken Soup tonight and link back to Jenn’s post. Thank you.

Chicken soup is also fab!
Beautifully done, Mardi.
This is such a great idea.
Thanks Cher.
A beautiful bowl of comfort food to serve in Support for Sandy! I’m thinking I might have to make this today! I am suddenly in the mood for Chili! Glad to connect via the event!
Thanks, likewise.
I love that Barb & Jenn have pulled #FBS4Sandy and the blogging community together. Your chili is a fabulous comfort food dish and you are wonderful for participating!
Thanks Paula, least I could do.
This is my family’s favourite chilli recipe! It’s the best I have ever made.
Thanks for sharing it, Mardi!
I know you love it and I love that!
So glad you posted this! My sister and her bf live in the Bronx to go to med school and even though they had minimal damage from the storm it was days and days after with no power and no gas for their car. Then finally getting rationed groceries for a crazy price only to have the power disappear from their place again! worry, worry, worry.
Such crazy times 🙁
I love a great bowl of chili such as this!!! In cold, winding weather like we’re expecting this weekend, there is nothing better. Pure comfort food!
It’s the perfect one bowl meal.
Can I just say how much I LOVE chili? Throw a hunk of cornbread next to a bowl of it and I am a happy lady!
Oh with cornbread that would be perfect.
Looks like a great comfort food.
It was indeed.
Classic chile con carne. Yep, that’s quality comfort food to me! YUM!
Right? Nothing more comforting.
Hi Mardi! I don’t visit as often as I should but coming together for #FBS4Sandy is an awesome way to get reaquainted. Your chile con carne is stunning! I suppose that’s a weird way for someone to describe chile con carne but when I look at your photos, that’s the word that pops into my head. Oh, delicious too. I forgot to add delicious!!!
Thanks Renée.
I love this initiative (and your beautifully vivid chili recipe, Mardi!) and it has already inspired me to donate to the Red Cross. Thanks for the post and the links.
Thanks so much for your kind words and donation.
I can never––never!––resist a chili recipe, and this one looks especially warming and hearty. It would be a great contribution to this month’s Shine Supper Club (our theme is one-pot meals). 🙂
This is a keeper!
That looks delicious. I wish I could send some to my mom. Fortunately, she finally found a hotel room from which to escape her disaster of a house.
Glad she’s ok.
Authentic, hearty, and filling. This is a beautifully rendered chili and definitely one to be proud of. So warming on these chilly post-Sandy nights…
Just the way a chili should be.
This looks really great! Is there a way to make this in a slow cooker?
I’d say from step 7 you could put all the ingredients into a slow cooker, for say, 1 hour on high?
Thank you! I’ll try that!
