French Fridays with Dorie: Crunchy ginger-pickled cucumbers

It’s a quick French Fridays with Dorie this week – this was a super easy and fast recipe to make (Crunchy ginger-pickled cucumbers, p 340). And thankfully because even though I have been in Paris (and I know many of you wish you were too!), working at La Cuisine Paris, leading recipe testing sessions (this week was choux pastry – very proud of my testers – they made swans out of pastry!), tagging along many of their classes and tweeting delicious pictures of what we’re making or seeing, I actually have not been feeling 100% 🙁 So I was thankful for an easy recipe and one that contained ginger…

I’ve actually never pickled anything before (bad food blogger Mardi!) so it was nice to have a bit of a “pickling for dummies” version to start out with.

Cucumber with ginger, some herbs, sugar, salt and vinegar – so so easy. I only made a tiny quantity being on my own here and not being sure I would like this but it was surprisingly tasty. I ate some of it with a simple baguette as a light lunch and enjoyed the flavours a lot.  Definitely something I would make again as part of a charcuterie or hors d’oeuvre platter….

French Fridays with Dorie participants do not publish the recipes on our blogs, rather, we prefer if you purchase Around My French Table for yourselves (trust me, you definitely want this book!) which you can do here on Amazon or Amazon Canada. Or for free worldwide shipping, buy from The Book Depository. Go on, treat yourself – join us I have not missed a week since October 2010 and the recipes that I didn’t like I can count on one hand.

Can’t join me in Paris this summer? How about “Un aprùs midi à Paris” – a new class I will be teaching at Aprhrodite Cooks this coming October? Join me for a sweet afternoon learning the secrets to some classic French desserts: the elusive macaron, profiteroles, tarte au citron, madeleines and mendiants. We’ll be making “petit four” sizes of each in a hands on class and participants will leave with a box of the class’s creations. After the class you will receive recipes to help you recreate your Parisian treats at home. Refreshments of tea and coffee and infused waters enjoyed throughout the afternoon. Click to book your spot for this exciting new class on Saturday October 13th 2012.

I’m also thrilled to be teaching my first macaron class at Aphrodite Cooks in November – Macarons: Simple comme Bonjour! “Simple comme bonjour” means “as easy as A, B, C” and really, macarons are not as difficult as everyone makes them out to be. Spend the afternoon in a hands-on class, learning the secrets of this temperamental, yet exquisite French delicacy – you’ll leave with some of your creations and a new found confidence (and recipes!) to tackle the cookie with the bad reputation all by yourself at home! Refreshments and snacks will be served. Click to book your spot in this new macaron class on Saturday November 3rd 2012.

  1. Now that sounds delightfully refreshing, running around here on days where it’s 36C – before the humidex. (In a suit, natch!)

  4. It’s a bummer to not be feeling great when you are enjoying such a wonderful experience. Yes, I am one of those who envy you but am happy that you are sharing your experiences with us all. I am glad to know about your mini-classes as I may have the opportunity at some later time to participate. I enjoyed the cucumbers. This week we needed simple also. Thank you for your kind words – I know you’re a busy gal and I appreciate the time you took to write.

  5. So sorry you’re not feeling well, hope you are back to 100% soon. One can’t feel ill for too long in Paris.

Best of luck with all of your classes, sounds like a lot of work, but hopefully also some fun as well. Wish I was there.

  6. Beautifully done. And I had to giggle at Mr. Neil’s comment…we hit 105Âș…unheard of in this area. Feel better soon, Mardi!
