Les Petits Chefs make Jamie Oliver’s tomato soup, croutons and sticky sponge pudding

A lil ambitious this week, I was. After a 2 week hiatus from Les Petits Chefs due to illness then mid-term break, I had forgotten how long things take with 10 little boys in a science lab!  I chose 2/3 items from a complete menu this week – tomato soup with chunky croutons and sticky prune apricot jam sponge puddings (yes I know my limits with the boys. Prunes, even hidden at the bottom of the pudding might not have been so popular!)  The boys had been hankering for a dessert and what better dessert than a quick sponge pudding – cooked in the microwave?  I have made a version of these before with another group of Petits Chefs and a pumpkin version for myself so I knew they worked and were quick too.  To counter the sweetness, a simple tomato soup with roasted tomatoes, garlic, onions, basil and olive oil. What could be simpler?

We got to work chopping and peeling right away…

And prepping the roasting tray for the tomatoes…

The boys made quick work of the tomatoes…

And others worked on the croutons…

And *some* people thought I might not notice that a crouton was missing… Ahem. Mlle Michels sees everything!

Meanwhile, over at pudding central….

The puddings were literally whipped up in a few minutes then popped into the microwave for 6 minutes…

Meanwhile, the tomatoes had come out of the oven and were ready to be blended.  Cos, you know, who wants a chunky tomato soup???

I left a couple of the older boys in charge of the blending whilst I went to check on the puddings. Sadly, the microwaves are not that powerful and I was not altogether sure that they were ready after 6 minutes. So I put them in a little longer. They are funny looking things…

But so delicious when they are turned upside down and have the lovely jam oozing down the sides.  I didn’t get a shot of one since we just made enough puddings for each of the boys… (and we were running terribly late, I didn’t want to hold them up). The puddings were probably a little overdone but I suggested they eat them with a little syrup or cream or ice cream. Apparently they were “really good” 😉

The soup, on the other hand, I DID manage to snag a tiny bowl of. This was amazing. I was blown away at how so few ingredients could taste so good. I’ll definitely be making this again – so easy and so tasty. Who would bother with canned tomato soup after tasting this?

  1. Totally agree about the tomato soup – once I’d made this recipe I’ve never looked back. Better than any canned product by a longshot, and so freaking easy!

  2. I remember my grandma used to make me grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup. I can’t wait to try this…the canned stuff tastes too salty for me now so I never have it.

  3. I can imagine the flavour of that soup, with the roasted tomatoes…mmm, mmm, mmm. Love home-made croutons too. The boys must love you to pieces…even when you catch them pinching croutons 🙂
