Forever Nigella 4: Street party roundup

Phew – I hope you have all recovered from your Royal Wedding celebrations – I managed to make the Wedding spread over a few days myself, getting up early to watch it live, watching it on and off during the day (we made the Grade 3s watch “the kiss” – a lot of “Ewwwww” ensued!), hosting a party that night where we watched the Wedding again with a bunch of friends and attending a “Wedding after party” the night afterwards. Whew!

I’ve finally made it through the Forever Nigella Royal Street Party contributions – you were all so creative and generous!

Here’s my own contribution:

Quick crostini with avocado and green pea hummus, potato cakes with smoked salmon, white chocolate mint mousse and glitzy chocolate pudding.

So let’s see what else was on the table to celebrate this Royal occasion…

Foodiva went all out, following my lead, and made three fabulous dishes: Halloumi with chili, pigs in blankets, and cherry cheesecake.  Isn’t her halloumi with chili fabulous?

I was particularly enamoured with her presentation of pigs in blankets…

A Plateful of Happiness came to the party with some smoked trout pâté and mini cheesecakes… I am not a fan of trout in any form but I happen to know that this is a super popular pâté in England and it’s a fabulous dish for a street party – it travels well!

Dancing Veggies brought one of my most favourite English dishes ever – Yorkshire puddings…

and something intriguingly called “Goldenballs” (how very Nigella!) that seems to be deep fried cheese. Mmmmm…

Cumin in the Cupboard brought an elegant, lighter dish – Grilled eggplant minty feta rollups. Aren’t they just delightful?

I love that someone thought to bring something a little spring-y 🙂

LiteBite brought an intriguing cottage cheese soy kebab – one of the healthier options on Nigella’s site.

Even though I like the naughtiness of all of Nigella’s rich dishes, I was appreciative of a couple of healthy choices!

Simply Cooked brought these gorgeous (and super easy) hasselback potatoes.  A super easy and pretty side dish!

Though I could happily eat this for dinner on its own!

A Taste of my Life brought these GORGEOUS Crab and Pepper Wraps.

So tasty and a pretty party platter!

And now onto the main course desserts…. I had to laugh as the contributions rolled in – so so many sweets!  Well, I guess we ARE talking about Nigella, after all, right?

Comfort Bites brought Nigella’s everyday brownies. Complete with chopped up pieces of fudge.

Nigella’s original version included chopped up Cadbury Dairy Milk bars. Yes, these could be MY everyday brownies!

Domestic Godesque brought these beautiful red, white and blue cupcakes

Yes, someone had a lot of fun with icing and food colouring, methinks!

Chocolate Log Blog brought a lovely looking chocolate marmalade cake:

I love the flavours of orange and chocolate together (Terry’s Chocolate Orange anyone?) and this looks like a decadent, yet not too sweet cake. Lovely!

Fuss Free Flavours brought this. Words are barely necessary:

Chocolate Malteaser Cake. Yes.

Working London Mummy brought my new fave desserts:

Royal Wedding Cake Pops.  Don’t you think Kate should have had these for her 2nd cake?

Sweet and Country brought these, the cutest biscuits I think I have ever seen:

William and Kate tea-time biscuits!

A Girl in her Kitchen brought a very Nigella-esque cake:

Not double, not triple but QUADRUPLE chocolate cake. I think Ms Lawson would approve!

Fabulicious Food brought the first of many Eton Messes. I was expecting a few of these since it’s so classically British. Street Party Royal Eton Mess.

Love the “Yummy” flags. Not that you need them – clearly this is very yummy!

Kitchen Heals Soul brought a positively dreamy dessert..

Chocolate Cloud Cake. Chocolate heaven!

The Kitchen Maid brought another quintisentially Brisith dessert – tiny trifles! With PIMM’S!

(Can I just say, I want that serving glass?)

My Custard Pie brought these lovelies:
Margarita creams. Yes please, I’ll take two!

Lana at Bibberiche brought another version of Eton Mess:

I love the elegant presentation!

The Good Life made Red, White and Blue cupcakes.

Yes apparently someone else enjoyed playing with icing this month!

Barbara over at Barbara Bakes made a dish that not only tastes wonderful but which has a cool name, Hokey Pokey:

Barbara was disappointed with these and nearly didn’t post them. Rest assured Barbara, I don’t know anyone who would call these “huge ugly blobs”. They’re beautiful!

Baking Obsessively also made Nigella’s Hokey Poky:

This was enjoyed sprinkled over vanilla ice cream. Mmmmmm!

Food Glorious Food baked these adorable Royal Red Velvet Cupcakes:

Whilst these probably taste amazing, I have to admit I can’t get past the lovely “Let them eat cake” signs. Very fitting for a Royal event!

I Heart Cupcakes also brought cupcakes to the party. Like, a gazillion of them. You HAVE to check out her Let them eat cake post which includes these beauties:

What I baked this weekend brought the dish with the best name ever. Love Buns.

With a pillowy, marshmallowy topping, these are adorable and I bet they pair very well with champers or Pimm’s!

Thanks everyone so much for participating – what a spread!!!

It was really hard for me to pick a winner amongst such wonderful offerings but I finally decided that the dish that “exhudes the most Nigella-ness” would probably be Barbara’s Hokey Pokey. Not only does it probably taste delicious but you can totally see Nigella going “Psssht – don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect, it’s the taste that counts, right?” Plus, I think you can always dip these things in chocolate, right?

Congrats Barbara, you’ve won this limited edition Emma Bridgewater “William & Kate” tea towel featuring illustrations by Matthew Rice.

Sarah will be in touch with you soon!

Interested in participating in this month’s Forever Nigella event?  It’s all about salads!

  2. I’m totally blown away by all these wonderful dishes, people have really got in the swing of making them look like a celebratory street party.

I can’t thank you enough for being such a wonderful hostess this month, I’m so disappointed I didn’t get to submit my entry in time but it’s probably just as well as it was no where near as good as all of these.

PS you may or may not be aware but “Goldenballs” is reputedly Victoria Beckham’s pet name for David much to the hilarity of our tabloid press!

  3. Mardi, great round up! I think my favorite out of all of these are the Goldenballs (with Becks in mind ;-)), the Royal Cake Pops and the Will & Kate-engraved biscuits. I’m going to check each and every one of these posts out. Congrats to Barbara! I’ve made Nigella’s hokey pokey to go with my ice cream once, and it was lovely…

  4. Whan an AMAZING round-up! Royal Wedding or not, its time for another party!!! I can’t wait to try out some of these ideas and I agree, Prince Harry had better start booking us all up to cater his wedding next!

  5. Great round up – and a worthy winner. Hokey pokey is difficult to make – but she presented it so beautifully. In the Nigella Express TV series she makes it to take to a party but eats it all in the taxi on the way there!

  6. Great round-up. All looks delicious! Bit disappointed my entry didn’t make it (I hope you received it) in but then there were rather a lot of cupcakes. The hokey pokey is one I’ve been meaning to try for ages so may well now give it a go! Love the William and Kate biscuits too – brilliant!

  7. Look at all those submissions! I think the eggplant/feta rollups are my fave…I spent the royal wedding day cruising Loch Ness (for real) — but we didn’t have a TV on board, so we stopped at a pub for dinner and to watch the highlights! Theresa

  8. What a delightfully delicious creative bunch to have graciously attended the party and to have brought such amazing and appetizing looking dishes. I certainly don’t envy you having had to pick the winner.

Good thing these gatherings aren’t happening IRL…would would ever want to leave!?
